If the 996 headlights were so "universally panned by everyone" how did Porsche manage to sell so many 996s? In fact far more than any other previous 911 generation? Many folks thought the 964 was ugly and never be valuable, what are they saying now?
Addressing the broader question. Yes, the third brake light will have zero impact on future valves of the 992.1.

The particulate filter in question is in the exhaust system. It captures small particulates that are known to be unhealthy. The 992s sold in North America do not have them, but all 992s sold in Europe do have the filters. Not sure about the rest of the world.

I think for most people the real significance of the GPF is the effect on the exhaust note of the car.

Personally, I hope that the 992.2 is a hybrid.
That will make our car more special. The last purely ICE 911 ever made.
I think electrification will forever change this car, perhaps even more than water cooling ever did

Nonsense. Most people like it. It’s distinct. It’s not controversial. It clearly hasn’t hurt demand for the car.
996 prices have shot up despite the headlights being universally panned by everyone. There will no impact to resale here.
The potential change most likely to result in a difference in resale between 992.1 and 992.2 cars will be the introduction of GPF (particulate filters) in the United States.

The rise in 996 prices is just due to the shortage of new cars due to COVID. All used car prices have shot up because of this. Most base model 996 Carreras are still only approx $25-30k. They’ll fall back down once the shortage is over (projected to be in 2022). That’s a good example of a catastrophic light design!
I agree about the GPF. That’s another concern. However, that’s probably a matter of taste too… Some people will think it sounds fine and others won’t. Actually, all of these things (design changes, sound, etc) come down to a matter of taste. When it becomes a problem for resale is when a large percentage of the buyers don’t like it.

Using your own logic against you.

I actually thought about it, and doesn’t look like it wouldn’t be too difficult to design/build a replacement engine cover with a less objectionable 3rd brake light.

Given the environment and incredible demand, I wouldn’t expect a 992.2 anytime soon. The pandemic has been interesting in terms of its impact to the product refresh cycle. New 992s are being delivered with one keyfob and manual steering adjustments. Heck, the Macan got a surprise .3 refresh.
It’s kinda funny actually… When manufacturers change things, people freak out. When they don’t change things, people complain that it hasn’t changed enough. You’re damned if you do, and damned if you don’t 😂

Yeah, they probably spent a lot of energy designing the 996’s horrible headlights too. That doesn’t make it good. Honestly, I don’t care about the “11” representation. I think they tried to get a little too “clever”, and ended up adding a design element that isn’t going to age well.
