991 so outdated looking

Many decades ago my friends and I use to laugh at American car manufacturers who always made each successive model much larger than the prior. A typical example is the Mustang which had a curb weight of 2445 lbs in 1964 but had grown to over 3500 lbs by 1972. Porsche OTOH use to keep their models small and light weight. Porsche has now succumbed to the American "big is beautiful" design methodology.

All 911’s have there place in time, and I’ve had 4 991’s and this may be the last for sometime. Not a fan of the new direction the new car has Panamera traits when you see the rear. Looks good to some, and great for them. I’ve never bought into the hype of the new model I buy what looks good to me regardless of model as I don’t care what people think about the latest and greatest. Unless Porsche makes something that looks better than my best the keys will not leave my hands. I love all the analog displays, and I care less about the radio/screen that’s why they make SUV’s for comfort.

All 911’s have there place in time, and I’ve had 4 991’s and this may be the last for sometime. Not a fan of the new direction the new car has Panamera traits when you see the rear. Looks good to some, and great for them. I disagree with the folks who are basically saying that “the new model always looks better” and “owners of the older model are going to complain to justify their ownership of the older version.” Sure there will be some owners who are like that, but I believe true Porschephiles, like the ones you might find on Rennlist, are more sophisticated and mature than that, and many of us own and can afford multiple Porsches and/or sports cars.
And in the case of the 911, history has shown that newer is not necessarily better as far as design and more subjective elements (and even performance if you take out the HP increase and factor in driving experience, which is again subjective). If you were to take a poll, most people would say they like the look of the 964 and 930 over the 996. And you’d still probably get more people who like the 964 over the 993. There is a reason Singer restores 964s.

When I purchased my Aventure Green 992 Carrera S I kept my 2012 Congac 991 Carrera S and they sit in the garage side by side. They are both great cars. There are many differences and also similarities. The 992 is refined in nearly every way but they are both Porsche. Often on a Sunday I often drive both on same day for 50-100 mile drives in the desert and mountains of Central Oregon.

Sorry brother, not wowed at all by color or looks of car. Looks too soft since you put it out there. Don't like those wheels with that color and chrome trim around the windows looks Lexus like. I do like the black RS though, but would not take the above 991 S if you gave it to me for free. Limited garage space and would never drive it.

992 makes the 991 look outdated
I was in the market not too long ago between getting a 991.2 and 992, also had a few other non-P cars that were in the mix.
It really came down to getting a car I always dreamed of buying in the 911.. especially now that I am at a point in my life that makes this dream possible.
After extensive research and comparisons, I came down to the final choice between the 991.2 and 992.
I found myself holding back on the 991.2, even with great deals available when I was comparing it to the 992. Several things stood out to me that ultimately helped me make my decision.
As for the exterior. The new design rear end is my favorite part. The round dominating wide stance along with the 3D light bar just adds to the perfect curves on the rear. A definitive design upgrade over the 991 IMO. With that said, the 992 standard front end turned me off with the massive smiling plastic compared to the the 991 keeping a classic Porsche look (however the 992 remedied this with a sport design option). I love the look of the 991 and the 992, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
However, the interior is what made the 991.2 look 15+ years outdated. The 991 uses matte plastic and a small screen that reminds me of an old ‘05 Lexus. The technology of a 2019 Porsche should not be that of an old early turn of the century car. The screen and the gauges needed to make a significant leap in technology, which they did. I still think the 991 has character inside and out, but it is dated. I believe the lack in tech should and still looks good for the high-end performance targeted variants of the 911 (i.e. Turbos, GT3, GT2RS).. but the base, S, GTS needed a GT oriented interior, and the 992 put the 911 on par with the competition.
This doesn’t go without saying the 992 doesn’t have its flaws on the interior. Not a fan of the black shiny plastic center console which seems to be an option for many high end manufacturers to blend the screens with the rest of the car. Though I do like it a lot better than the matte plastic overload of buttons and trim that we see in the 991. I don’t like having to pay extra for upgrade trims in the 992, though you must to avoid that awful plastic look.
I know the obscured gauges are a big talking point, though I haven’t had an issue myself with it. And the infamous “nubbin” has been an even more polarizing subject. Though I feel it blends with the 992 cockpit well, and the bulbous style shifter of old needed to go.
Don’t get me wrong. The 991 still has great style and character, but the 992 has just made it look so outdated!! I will however be with the purists when the 992 starts rolling out the high end variants, and hopefully they don’t have an overload of “tech”. Those cars are designer for one purpose in mind, performance and speed.
The 992 and it’s current variants NEEDED to take a big step up and bring the overall feel of the car into the 21st century.

At the end of the day so do I, but just find it odd why some troll a 992 forum to tell all the 992 guys how ****ty their car looks when they claim they have no interests in purchasing a 992.
I am somewhat excited about the change and look forward to picking up a 992 Turbo. That said, I was somewhat excited about my 2017 Turbo, but just dumped it and went back to yet another 997.2 GTS for daily driver. Kinda miss the power, but I just enjoy the 997.2 GTS and 997.2 Turbos better for daily driving duties.

Hope the newbies realize they are buying a car whose original design was 1963. If you want something super “modern” looking, you’re sort of shopping the wrong make.

You got the right car for you. I think one of the things you'll find is that the groups of people that prefer certain generation all care less and less about the infotainment the farther back you go. The 992 will also look dated when the 993 (haha) comes out. The 997 will likely be the most classic with the newest version without a dependance on screens. Even most car journalists focus much more on the "quirks and features" of the infotainment and less and less on the emotional quotient of driving pleasure.
