Are most folks just buying winter tires or a complete set with wheels as well. I have a complete winter set up for my M5 (and did for the previous one as well). My thought process was that it would be easier to change out wheels instead of mounting balancing tires and - at least at the time - there were not many places that did a lot of 19's and 20's and I was worried about damage to the wheel. Fast forward nearly a decade from that original decision and I think that most reputable shops can probably do the change out without damaging the wheels and I and definitely getting tired (no pun intended) of climbing a ladder with the wheels and tires to store them in rack. Tires only would be a dream.

I have always done a full set and gone down an inch in size for tire cost and better snow performance. However, I’m not planning on driving my 992 in deep snow (C2S) and my dealer said if they damage they replace. With ownership length and tires lasting 3-4 winters, it didn’t make sense to get a full set this time around. Lifting a tire without a wheel on and off a garage rack is definitely a bonus!!

Full set is the way to go. Allows you to:

1) Easily swap at home
2) Downsize rims
3) Keep OEM rims in great shape

would just, as time goes by, remove the "easily" from your first point

There is a lot of debate on this. Some people say that you risk the rim/tire damage with mounting and un-mounting - plus the cost can be significant (Porsche charges $400+ to swap them). Some people say that tire shops (think Discount Tire) is perfectly competent and do the work for a lot less.

I think it is a 50/50 thing - works for some, not others. I prefer to have my own 2nd set so I can change them myself.

I don't expect to be driving the car much in the snow for a whole host of reasons and would likely not want to have smaller wheels on all winter simply to give me more ability to drive in the snow. This is my garage set-up and it is getting a bit old hoisting the 20 inch rears with 315s on them. I can imagine it will be even less fun with 21s. That, coupled with the increased ability of good shops to change them, is what is leading me to re-think my approach. Even at $400/swap ($800/year), that would have been much cheaper than the HREs I bought as mu summer set.

Yep, I can see that placing them there would be a major PITA. If there's no other place perhaps you can store them at a friend's place for a case of beer or two?

$400/swap $800/year? My dealer quoted me $200/swap or $400/year. At the dealer!

Got Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 winters put on my 20/21 Carrera Classics today by the dealer. $339 each for the fronts 245/35/R20. $447 each for the rears 295/30/R21. With install and tax it came to $1920. $120 of that was tax.

I was just using the high numbers quoted above by Doug_999 to make the point that even at that price, it still is cheaper.

Lucky you.
I looked everywhere but couldn't find Alpin 5 21" tires (for rear) anywhere; dealer had none and costco website was showing 'out of stock' for quite some time.
I ended up getting a whole Carerra S Winter wheel set in Black.

I got my 20/21 set with OZ Racing Ultra Leggera rims from Tire Rack back in February IIRC.

FWIW, when I had the dealer swap tires on the wife's Macan S due to arrival in late December (it came with summer tires) they charged double what a normal tire shop would.

I think that
a) my dealer quoted me the 305s in the rear which are considerably ($200+ each) more expensive. I didn't know about the 295s and he didn't tell me that was an option (well I knew, but didn't think they were the right size)
b) your dealer did all the work for about $228 - which is unheard of and you are VERY lucky. The dealer I ended up getting my snow wheel/tire set from wanted $249 just to swap them! And that's just taking four wheels off and putting four wheels on! You got yours installed and balanced for $228!!! Amazing.
c) your dealer rocks
