The housing market is insane....hope you get your asking price and build a dream garage! Wish my wife would agree to 3 bedroom, 6 car garage...if only .

Well yeah, but! One you don't need to be in close proximity to SFO, OAK or SJC the sale of your condo can set you up very nicely in Orinda, Lafayette, Walnut Creek if you want to stay near a BART Line or even Santa Cruz or Carmel for that matter. Once you get halfway to the edge of what most folks can stand in the way of a commute, the prices, while still not exactly what most folks would call reasonable, become do-able given what your net is on a condo in The City.
That's what my wife and I did when we retired. Moved from a lovely place in Palos Verdes to just about the southern end of Orange County. Conservatively what we bought here is easily five times the house we sold and we're not hemmed in by what I call the Traffic Island that being near the hub generates.

Reason we moved from Hawaii. Sold our house and retired swapping square inches for acres, regret we didn't do this 30 years ago. Fishing, my siberian sled dogs, don't see or hear my neighbors. Sure don't miss pink flamingos and endless traffic jams.

If you’re living in SF and want more room, but want to stay in the Bay Area, move to the South Bay. I started my career in SF and soon moved for much bigger home, lot, and garage space. Plus the sun shines more down here.

I did similar by moving from Oahu to Maui. Lots more space here, and less traffic. More unique free thinkers though.

would love to spend summers in AK after I retire.

Why I won't stay here either tho Siberian...just crazy prices and everything is more expensive...than the mainland. Milk $6-7/gal vs $2-3 I paid in Nebaska. Car repairs for my kids cars....$250 ignition repair there...$865 here. Housing $1800k for 2600 square feet there; $1.2 million for 1200 here. Its just crazy everywhere. Looking at what's next up for part two when I get to hang up the uniform and retire....what I will miss tho the most is all the friendships I've made in the military. Really are family...lifelong and good people! Missed a lot of things that you guys have mentioned above but hope to enjoy it and ride off into the sunset in my 992 one day soon!

I hope that's a typo and you will miss the friendships you made in the military. Thank you for your service and give a call if you fly through Eielson or Elmendorf.

Oh Yeah! I believe it was Mark Twain who is quoted as saying "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." LOL Quite true, in my experience as well. It can be well over 100*F in Fairfield and the temperature will drop ~1*F/Mile until you get to San Francisco and it's 58*F in the middle of the summer!

Just saw this...wow.. would not want to have a delivery waiting or a car pending service there at this dealer in Germany. The flooding has caused havoc there in some places....
