I’m not sure that was the intention of his post, but rather to suggest the date may not be representative of a definitive production schedule based on everybody’s date being the same.

Correct: The 09/11/2020 date is the day that they will assign the actual date for the start of the build. For example in my TYD they call the September 11th the "Scheduled for Production" date. The actual "Start Production" date for mine is presently 09/18/2020.

2021 Targa 4s on Order with Commission No.
Happy to report that I received a phone call from my dealer yesterday 08/28/20, indicating that they had attained a Targa 4s allocation for me. I'm pleasantly surprised...almost Giddy. I was thinking maybe an allocation/build date would be available during Jan through March, 2021 with delivery in perhaps, May 2021.
Lock 10/20 Build 11/06 to 11/20, with delivery to me on Jan 22nd, 2021. I'm thinking, it will be shipped to Benicia Ca and then to the dealer.
Had an 80 Targa SC, back in the day. I have spec'd the 992 out hundreds of times since the introduction of the 911 version 992. Always seems to come out to be about the same specification every time.
Thanks, Mark

Has anyone ordered a lightly optioned car?
I'd like to get a relatively basic car. Do dealers frown on this, or are they OK with it?
Also, do people tend to negotiate a discount, or do they pay MSRP?

The discount you are able to negotiate is dependent on so many variables it is staggering to say the least. The best way is to negotiate with as many dealers as you can. In fairly rapid order you'll discover what the current market will bear. There are numerous books written about this subject. Useful on-line sources of current market conditions and thus typical discount ranges include: Consumer Reports, TrueCar, JDPower, Kelly Blue Book, NADA, etc.

Generally speaking a dealer makes more , as a percentage, on options than they do on the base MSRP. Never-the-less they do make a significant amount on the base MSRP and thus they are generally more than "OK" with selling any car to a willing buyer. Naturally their motivation is to sell heavily optioned cars if/when possible.

Dealers get allocations by specific model. So if a dealer has an allocation for a C2 or C4, they would be more than happy to have it pre-sold instead of sitting on the lot. However, 2021 is a tough year to buy a 911 since production has been impacted by Covid. Dealers will be getting new allocations in early September so call around after that to see what discount might be offered. With the lack of inventory, discounts are pretty thin right now.

My TYD delivery date for a 2021 C2S was just moved from 9/11 all the way to 10/2! Been in Emden since 8/4, and TYD has it loading onto the Siem Cicero on 8/28, which makes no sense given the SC sailed well before that and is due in Baltimore on 9/3. So either they are showing the wrong ship and my car is still in Emden, or it is on the SC and almost to the US. If it's all EPA related then I guess there is nothing to be done, but in my opinion there is no excuse for the utter uselessness of the TYD site. What should be a real value-add for a $150k car, and something that should be fairly easy to implement and keep updated, this site causes this community nothing but disappointment and frustration

Three Wheelin'
Interesting—I just checked and mine shows 10/2, also. It was 9/11 earlier today. That said, it shows “en route to Porsche Center” (the last milestone prior to its arrival at the dealer) on 9/11 So I can’t figure out why it would take three weeks to travel across town—other than EPA/CARB. I bet they just got news for CA cards that CARB isn’t happening until mid- or late-September.
Oh well.
