I have owned a Porsche for over 23 years and participated in rallies, club racing, autocross, mountain rides and taken DE instruction at all the Porsche US facilities numerous times.
Porsche street 911s have become SO powerful now with blinding and quickly achieved top end speed during these last 15 years of so, often capable of speeds amateur drivers are actually very lucky to control, even with the experience in improving driving skills and in, i.e. controlled track situations at times.
As I have gotten older, I have realized what I didn't when I was younger and trying to appease my own ego......I now know or let's say better acknowledge what can go really wrong and it has slowed me down considerably.........participating in fast driving mountain drives with 90 degree turns going ***** out is challenging, but also very dangerous - there can be oil or substances on the road causing handling issues, blown or worn tires, mechanical failures, cars coming into the highway, objects in the road, etc....just a ton of things that can create damage, injuries and death, unfortunately, in more instances than we all care to see........
I am sure the two relatively younger guys in the Crown Rally got caught up in the moment like we all do at these driving events and just pushed the envelope too far.....very easy to do with all the group testosterone flowing and a newer Turbo S and other high-end machines to test out....
They probably hit 140 mph plus many times in their car driving life, with no issues, but the probabilities of something going wrong finally caught up with them.....Just like they do with professional drivers on closed circuits.........
HOPEFULLY THE BRUTAL PHOTOS FROM THIS ACCIDENT WILL SERVE AS A REMINDER AND SAVE SOME LIVES IN THE FUTURE, AS PEOPLE FORTUNATE TO BE DRIVING THESE POWERFUL EXPENSIVE MACHINES, TAKE A REAL BREATH, REMEMBER THIS PARTICULAR ACCIDENT, PHOTOS OF THE AFTERMATH, OR SIMILAR ONES WE ALL HAVE HEARD ABOUT, AND TAKE A QUIET MINUTE TO THEMSELVES TO THINK ABOUT THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS THAT WOULD NOT TAKE THE NEWS OF THEM DRIVING TO A SENSELESS DEATH VERY WELL........ALL WE CAN SAY NOW IS CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILIES IMPACTED FOR LIFE.......AND HOPE THERE IS A REDUCTION IN THESE TYPES OF TRAGEDIES, AS IT SEEMS THEY ARE REPEATED MUCH TOO OFTEN..........

Such a shame, there have been several rallies roll through town over the past two weeks, this rally is supposed to Saturday or Sunday.... I wonder how they'll respond.

I will be in the Crown Rally North later this summer. I anticipate they will try keep people on a shorter leash on the open roads. Driving at those speed is, obviously, dangerous to yourself and other drivers. The nice thing is this rally stops at tracks, so you can get your speed fix there. IMO no need to drive like, but I’m not here to pile on these two unfortunately gentlemen. When you have a group of cars like this driving, things always get “spirited.”

This kind of high speed driving happens in Rally"s more than what we like to think. This is why I personally refuse to participate in any of these
as far as loss of control. Can't judge this particular situation
but normal routine in these Rally's
drive few hundred miles a day , dinner and drinking, some will always over do it , and repeat the next day
so fatigue plus residual alcohol effect can affect car control

Unfortunate. The whole intention of these rallies are to drive recklessly and network with highly successful people. We’ve all done dumb things, so I won’t bash them.
Rest In Peace fellow gearheads.

I came across this Rally near Minturn, CO on Wednesday this week. Lead cars were two Corvettes doing about 120+ mph on a remote road. Lambos and GT3RS followed doing about 90. Remainder of cars were doing 80ish. I did not see this Turbo S on the road on Wednesday, though.
The problem is that these remote towns (Norwood is way out there, about 45 min from Telluride) have such great driving roads, and the testosterone starts flowing. I've been there, and decided that it's not good for me or anyone else to be doing triple digits on the road.
