(more) Lightweight Glass Drama
#166
Read through the thread and noticed a couple of members asking but I didn't see an answer. Does anyone know if the front windshield can be replaced with an 'normal' OEM glass if the car currently has the lightweight glass option? I have the lightweight option on my 992 CS and I'm on my third windshield one rock chip, one mystery. Thanks!

Thanks, I figured I be responsible for the cost but when I reached out to my SA he said they can only replace with the same windshield. Sounds like I'll have to go another route.

You do know that very, very few; (none?) dealership service departments replace glass, right? It is all farmed out
Plus, if the poster wants to use the OEM non-lightweight glass which the dealership won’t/can’t use, they are going to have to outsource the installation anyway.

FYI...
Deliveries of T with LW glass started a few weeks ago and there are now two cases of cracked glass. One happened while installing tint on the side window and the other spontaneously on the windshield.

I had my drivers side replaced twice and this time they adjusted the track so it's not so close to the quarter rear glass. They also said it's from a different supplier.

I have had Safelite replace four windshields on four different vehicles, all with active safety systems. I asked for and received OEM glass and the work was flawless.

My comment and opinion is I’d never have them touch my car - they do mass market cars and it shows. I want the guy who has done 10 Porsche windows, wherever you find them. I went to a high end body shop I’ve used for my BMWs and I know they will deliver a high end result with their trusted installers. And if they mess up and scratch the A pillar (which has happened to me before on a bimmer) I know they will make it right,
Its your time and money, you makes your bets and live with em

Well, it happened to me today with only 25 total miles on the car. I finally had some time to get it out and start prepping it for an event this coming weekend. I brought it to the house yesterday to wash it and then drove it back to my storage building and put it away for the night. I went over this afternoon to start detailing it and found the drivers side glass broken. Unfortunately the P dealer is over a 3hr drive from me and there is not an easy way to get the car back to them right now. I am thinking about ordering it myself and trying to replace it. It's less than $600 and it would cost me more in time to try to get back to the dealer and then back home. Has anyone else tried to replace their own?
