(more) Lightweight Glass Drama
#181
Update, I went through the dealer and had the windshield replaced with regular OEM glass rather than going back with the lightweight and it has worked out great. I had to sign a disclaimer from the dealer basically saying I was asking for a part to be installed on the vehicle that was not originally part of the build but all has worked out great.
Read through the thread and noticed a couple of members asking but I didn't see an answer. Does anyone know if the front windshield can be replaced with an 'normal' OEM glass if the car currently has the lightweight glass option? I have the lightweight option on my 992 CS and I'm on my third windshield one rock chip, one mystery. Thanks!

Well, it happened to me today with only 25 total miles on the car. I finally had some time to get it out and start prepping it for an event this coming weekend. I brought it to the house yesterday to wash it and then drove it back to my storage building and put it away for the night. I went over this afternoon to start detailing it and found the drivers side glass broken. Unfortunately the P dealer is over a 3hr drive from me and there is not an easy way to get the car back to them right now. I am thinking about ordering it myself and trying to replace it. It's less than $600 and it would cost me more in time to try to get back to the dealer and then back home. Has anyone else tried to replace their own?
Here's the bulletin for the defect.

Thank you for sharing the document Wilder.
Just curious to learn what MONTH of the year "builds" these cars are that are demonstrating cracked windows?

Ive got a windshield that is delaminating (layers separating). Assume next will be the separated layer cracking.

No it doesn’t. The document has a date, but not when the issue was resolved due to misalignment on factory built cars. I know it was resolved with 6/22+ cars, actually before that, but not all production dates are actual completion dates so error a few weeks.

I’m just stating that what you’re saying and what the report is saying is different… by about a year. I have no reason to believe you, unlike the report

Mine was built in April. However, I don't think it matters. I was searching for info to decide whether to do a protective film on the windshield once replaced and found there is an unreasonable amount of cars with cracked LWG going back to the 991.2 gen.

Bottom of page 2 and 2nd item on page 6. Q2 2023 is when the updated glass will be first available. If it were available on cars produced a year earlier as you suggest, why would it take a full year for them to be available as a replacement part?

If you read the report it says that along with they still don’t have an explanation for why the other glass is cracking.
