Any advice for this newbie?
I believe if you search the forum on the GT4 shifter, you'll find lots of happy owners. I don't personally agree with your shop, and really love the additional weight to the shifter and the lower positioning.

Suncoast is great and Sunset Porsche was a little cheaper when I purchased. (Happy customer of both with no affiliation to either)

(Look up the the thread so we don't hijack this one further than I already have)

Dumb question, most likely, but how do you use a GT4 shifter for 6mt with a 991 7 mt?

That's a really odd question...having owned both (sold GT4) I much rather prefer the 991's 7MT.

While I was driving the GT4 I kept trying to get into 7th...its so nice.

Fortunately the GTS'S received an updated 7 speed. Don't know how you would fix something that was never broken.

I was a C-hair from getting the PDK, but I'm glad I stayed true to my manual gearbox roots. It's hard to beat that connection you feel with the car when rowing through the gears.

Just upgraded to a 2015 C4S cab (from an '06 C2S). It was hard finding what I wanted with a MT but all worth it. (I just don't know when I will ever get to use that 7th gear!)

Pretty sure that this has been debunked and the GTS shifter and transmission are same as normal Carreras.

Not dumb at all.

The shifter moves two cables. It is the movement of the cables which moves the shifter forks in the transmission. The shifter itself translates your fore / aft and side / side motion into motion of the cables, which then moves the shift forks accordingly.

So it is the transmission's shift forks itself which determine what gear you're going into. The shifter from the GT4 is literally the same base with a shorter shift shaft on it.

Hope this makes sense.

Highway runs. And it works well. I averaged close to 30 MPG on my ride home from buying the car in North Carolina.

Actually it is different. Here the Porsche documentation to prove so. Paragraph 3

The 991 7 MT needs nothing. Every bit as good as my old 6 spd 997 with sport shifter.
