Unfortunately, no aftermarket head unit is "plug-n-play". Requires splicing and retrofit with the Suncoast audio kit I also shared.

Any competent shop that installs these things will have no problem getting this fitted. Having a reverse camera integrated is a big plus.

I was the "first" 991 owner to order the 4RS shifter from Suncoast and confirmed retrofit success, then the floodgates opened up pushing ETAs out the window to 2023.

I ordered in March 2022, received in June 2022.

Default came in Silver or Blue (match launch color), I chose Silver.

Hey @isugoo , before I forget, here are the rim sizes:20x9 +51
20x12 +45

Will post pics when I get them mounted. Need to get them ceramic coated first.

By removing the PCM, what else do you lose besides the parking sensors? (This is according to the Suncoast description). Did you need to have this coded? (Also according to the Suncoast description). How are the functions of that Pioneer unit? How well does it handle CP?

I have a Burmester system and wonder how the Pioneer head stacks up with it? I have CP working on my 991.1, but I like the cleaner look of the center section of the console.

Couple of projects this weekend, re did the adapter harnesses for the tweeter upgrade, using better quality caps. I might use the other ones I had made with electrolytic caps for when I change out the rear tweeters.

I have still been getting codes and CEL with the O2 catted spacers I had, tried different configurations but no luck, so got these J style spacers and used the medium sized insert, just got back after a 30 mi drive, no codes or CEL yet. Too early to claim victory but staying hopeful. 🤞🏼

Used better poly 12 uF caps.

Gold spade terminals

Ready to mount.

Top, previous 45* catted spacers Bottom, J style spacers with medium sized insert.

Passenger side.

Driver side, tight but able to fit it.

I personally chose it because I wanted something with absolutely no physical buttons and wired CarPlay.

My feedback is only applicable to me, so it will not necessarily apply to you.

991.1 3RS Japan delivered from factory did not have the "outdated" PCM found in the same generation, so I never had the integration on the instrument cluster (which is the biggest advantage) instead we got a local unit Clarion with the worse sounding audio output ever along with a reversing camera. The local unit Clarion which worked as intended (nothing fancy nor to call home about) until Clarion EOL and stopped providing updates this year. Just as well, it was ironically starting to be exhibit software gremlins (non-responsive and the occasional freezing when the reversing camera was activated and required a power cycle to clear) that never got resolved.

991 GT cars also do not have parking sensors from factory, the 991.2 GT cars have reversing camera on the "newer" PCM but the sound quality and factory maps for Japan were just outright hopeless. PAG buys maps from local, regional vendors to be uploaded into PCMs.

Since I never had the "newer" PCM found in the 991.2s which TBH the "newer" PCM is nothing to lose sleep over either with lacklustre sound quality, the only benefit of the "newer" PCM IMO is having it integrated into the instrument cluster display. So I was open to whatever choices I like to upgrade to and there no coding whatsoever to do, since my car already has this Porsche kit installed from factory to accommodate the Japan market requirements.

Now that you understand my use case, how does this particular Pioneer unit I selected perform?
  • Wired CarPlay and Wired Android Auto works great, it's seamless, there is no waiting around. It just works. The dongle supplied is a USB-C connector instead of USB-A, so Pioneer definitely was future proofing this.
  • Audio output, sound quality is day and night vs even the "newer" PCM found in the 991.2s. My Buddy has a 991.2 GTS with upgraded speakers, it's nothing to brag about compared with Taycan audio with no factory upgrades.
  • Notifications on your phone is pushed onto the Pioneer on it's own separate notification screen, great idea that CarPlay and Android Auto should have already implemented by now. But instead we get voice playbacks for "road safety".
There are things I personally do not like, but I would not call them showstoppers. Would it have stopped me from buying this? No, but it's good to be sharing them now that I have it installed.
  • Pioneer can't code software for the life of them, well not like VW can either. So everyone is suffering from poor software development if we say Tesla is the gold standard for software in vehicles ATM.
  • Alexa along with other features that require Internet connectivity are best described as operating in a separate container when CarPlay or Android Auto is active, firstly it needs to be tether to something (most commonly your smartphone for data) to get everything to work. No tether, no work on the "other features". CarPlay or Android Auto do not need tethering to work seamlessly.
  • Once tethered, if you try to use Alexa when CarPlay or Android Auto is active, it will shut that down as Alexa is built into the Pioneer OS layer. There is also an evident lag when switching between Alexa and CarPlay or Android Auto. Wish I can delete Alexa.
  • Pioneer OS update and complimenting app, absolutely hopeless. Whichever idiot at Pioneer that designed this should be fired twice over. There are YouTube tutorials guiding how to do this, it took me 1 hour to figure out after watching tutorials to update my OS from 1x to the latest 3x. And what difference did the update provide? More useless Alexa configuration options, nothing else.
  • Finally, the built-in Browser and Weather apps. Both have been designed by absolute inepts. The browser is so slow and so clunky (feels like browsing on a Nokia) when running of a tethered 5G connection, it's un-useable even with the best intents. Same goes for the weather, better off checking the weather on your phone.

Time for things to get expensive. Now to accumulate the list for necessary components to complete my gt3 touring look.

I have to ask, which of the two cars do you most enjoy driving? Which car feels more "personal"?

Difficult question.... I enjoy both very much

The sound of the 991.1 GTS is insane! The red one is already sold, I'm just waiting for the new owner to pick it up

Why did I sell it? well.., I wanted more engine power and I certainly got it plus the interiors, wide body, etc

The best would be to keep both but I like my peaceful marriage

Got the calipers painted Porsche Acid Green and did 35% tints on everything except the windshield. Pics are not great since it’s raining out. Love the way it changed the look of the car.
