Description:

I finally found a source for these and I will sell them for basically my cost taking into account what I have to pay for them with shipping and on average what I have to spend to pack and ship them. Several have asked lately so here is your chance! The cover is plastic (not leather) but the reason for getting this is to change the trim ring on the airbag. The one on the airbag is a single-use item and the tabs on the back are melted in place so it cannot be removed without destroying it - see pic of what it looks like when removed. I included pics of my current one, which I painted Satin Black, and in my previous car, I had it painted Miami Blue.

As someone who has wanted to change out his chrome ring, this is interesting but I have some questions.

So, you paint this new ring and then you have to melt the tabs onto the new cover? What do you use to melt the tabs?

Also, what is the process for removing your stock airbag cover and replacing it with this cover? Last thing I want to do you is mess around with an airbag and damage it.

Thx

It is much easier! There are threads on the process in the 911 and 718 Forums but basically, it is all done from the outside since I know of no way to take apart the airbag! The OEM trim ring is a rubbery material while the replacement is plastic albeit it is identical otherwise. The trim ring is taken off from the outside by getting a tiny screwdriver behind the trim ring and then using small pliers to pull it out, little by little. When it is all out you just put push the new one into place. Some have used a clear adhesive, such as silicon, but I did not use anything since it went it firmly, and if someone ever had the airbag detonate there is no worry about debris hitting you in the face IMO since the airbag opens to the side. I did both of mine while the airbag was still in the car but it only takes a few seconds to take the airbag out so one could do it outside of the car if they wanted to.

I need to order at least 20 in order for them to be sent (from China or course) so as long as I get commitments for at least 10 I will pick up the rest of the cost since sooner or later the remainder will sell.

By the way, since I have had requests for Satin Black trim rings I will paint them that color for those that want one; however, if one wants a different color you will be on your own! I suggest Krylon paint & primer in one rattle can for those doing their own.

Bob's a champion.

Might get more eyeballs from 991 and 718 sub forums dragging them over.

Thanks, I have done quite a few of these for this item and others...if I find something neat to do I like to pass it along for others as well. We are up to 5 so just 5 more to go and I will place the order.

I am just waiting to hear back from my source and when I do I will order and post it here so everyone knows. I am a few short but I will take the chance that over time more will want one.

Do they make one in Alcantara?

Nvm, found a company that makes custom steering wheel cover. Placed an order to match my alcantara sw with red stitching.

I am sorry to say but now it turns out that the minimum order is 30 and since there are only 5 or 6 interested I cannot order yet; however, if we get commitments for at least half (15) I will order them with the hope that at some point I can sell the other 15. It took a long time to sell them all from the last order so I hope everyone understands.
