Not sure if that is still the case, but just something I noted over this past year while looking.
Porsche is a bit unique in that model years don't get substantial included options and upgrades with more contemporary models. There is very little difference in a 2012.5 and a 2016.

If you take a BMW for example (consistent with MB, Audi, Jag, Lexus, etc) a 2014 has a completely different infotainment setup and got the 8 speed ZF. The 2014 is the same chassis nomenclature but the 2014 is way better than the 2013. Look at the M5 price delta between 2013 and 2014 for example.

The older a Porsche gets the less the model year matters within a 996, 997.1, 997.2, 991, etc. Recent ones don't really matter in terms of what you get but it's still a car and a luxury item. I have a 2012.5 and guarantee you it is in better shape with less miles than most 2016's.

Technically it is less than a year difference and the warranties could be punched around the same time, so that could be a factor.

Good point

Warranty/CPO is a factor but once that date has passed on all 991 - the year won't really matter.

But you are right, of course - definitely not an apples to apples comparison. A lot of other factors to consider and no two cars (or even markets) are exactly alike. And I would be willing to pay a little more for a clean, lower mileage car when possible.
Another big factor is how much the dealer paid. I actually met a RL'er at the dealer when I was picking up my 911; small world. Anyway, he was there to get a trade-in value on his 991, and your jaw would hit the floor if I told you what they bid. His response was something like, "I will drive it into the ground before I sell it at that price."

I was told the owner of my C2S traded it in on a deeply discounted new Turbo S, so they probably killed him on the trade in, which resulted in me getting a great deal

Yeah trade-in offers are normally pretty depressing with any make, Porsche even moreso...

I will drive this one until the wheels fall off! And then I will buy new wheels...

My 2013 (June '13) was built 20 months after my 2012.5 (Nov '11) was, so I suppose they could be a month apart or up to more than a year difference between model years. I hope I am doing the math on that correctly LOL...

It is amazing that with very few exceptions (a few options offered, maybe software in PCM), the 2012.5's are pretty much identical to the 2016's. That's partly why I don't hesitate in suggesting people consider well-maintained/good condition 2012.5's.

Hoping to hit 1,000,000 views by 2 year anniversary.

Will happened later in March or April most likely.

Still shocked with the popularity with being just shy of 2 years old here.
