So this goes out to all those who purchased an aftermarket warranty for their used 991?

Are you happy you did so, was it worthwhile to you?

Did you use it over the warranty period? Did you have a deductible?

I know many threads out there on warranties, would like to hear from folks who actually purchased one in the past or present.

all insurance is a casino and the math is not in your favor, otherwise it wouldn't be profitable.

if you can write a check for 10-15k without losing sleep you shouldn't get a warranty; if you can't write that check, you should get the warranty.

9/10 times self-insuring is cheaper...especially with wheels/tires.

I never bothered with an extended warranty until my 1998 Corvette - the second year of the C5. It had 11 computers and was more hi-tech than Chevy dealers were equipped to deal with at the time. As it turned out, the extended warranty more than paid for itself. I bought another one for my 991.1 GTS but haven't had to use it (yet).

Doug DeMuro used up all the "good luck" of having an aftermarket warranty, left us with nothing!

I have a carmax warranty on our BMW 328d sports wagon, haven't needed to use it in the past 2 years.

Bought a Fidelity Platinum policy last year, 3/36k for $3200. Haven’t used it so far. Will see if I will renew it next year. Contemplating buying one for the Macan about this time next year when the factory warranty runs out.

Ive done extended warranties on several BMWs and MBZs in the past and they more than paid for themselves, but the two 911s in which I have purchased extended warranties, never used.

Moral of this experience....keep buying Porsche.

A lot of it in my mind is the history of the car. Typically you can determine up front if a car has had track use, service issues etc. A lot of Porsches are weekend drivers with low miles and history. Cars from an original owner, no signs of hard use, etc I bought my 991.1 gts from an original owner who had records etc and i was able to look at the car and drive it. It's pretty rare catastrophic service issues develop on cars that have been maintained regularly. Does it happen? Occasionally, but you're kind of betting against history. If i'm buying a car with hard treatment, i'm going to lowball for it anyway or stay away from it. Time spent up front is time and money well spent.

With the number of fancy computers today in our cars and the cost to repair them Fidelity is interesting.

I agree with the comment. Be prepared to write a big check and if your okay with it gamble. But if a 10k repair bill is a nightmare for you or the better half Fidelity could just save a marriage.

You can burry the fidelity cost in the purchase of the car. Repairs bills get noticed bigly.

I purchased my Fidelity Platinum Warranty for about $4K. Less than a year and I've already had them pay out $1K for fixing a changeover valve.

I'm pretty happy with this overall.

To the person who said that if you can write a $10K check in your sleep, you should self insure.

There's a difference between beating on my 911 and knowing that my $4K warranty will cover anything vs beating on the car and knowing it can potentially cause more than my warranty cost out of my own pocket. The stories here about PDK failures definitely have me spooked.

If I owned a BMW, I would definitely have an aftermarket warranty. Been down that road.

However, now that my only cars are 911s (2013 991.1 coupe, 964 cab) and I've owned them for a while, I'm much more a "write the check" kinda guy. When you own an air-cooled 911, that's just part of the ownership experience lol. On the 991, it's never had any major issues and if I had bought a warranty it would've been a waste of money (hell I never even used the factory warranty really) - adding it now would be a giant waste of money (they get more expensive the older they get). If I have to write a 10k check, so be it, but the odds are in my favor.

I don't buy extended warranties, but I also do most my own work on cars, up to and including engine and transmission replacements. Electronics can be difficult in a modern car however - they are complex. I have a full Snap-On box in my garage with mostly Snap-On tools, but if you're not set up to work on your own cars - an extended warranty is not a bad idea. My single largest car expensive was blowing my 993 engine at VIR on Turn 10 in 2002, connecting rods right through the case. That was good for $ 20,000 and there is no warranty or insurance that covers that sort of thing. There went the wife's new granite counter tops!

I purchased a Porsche extended warranty on the GT3, little things cost a lot, haven't used it but if I do I will be happy I got it. If not, it's at least a piece of mind that I can enjoy the car with out any worries.

That being said, my Audi S3 is going off warranty at the end of the year, and I did NOT purchase the Audi extended warranty on it.
