Just got a 991.1 S....Comparing it my F80 M3
Hey Everyone,
This is my first post. I recently got a 991.1 Carrera S. Im missing the PSE button...GRR...if anyone can tell me the cheapest Porsche dealership to get it installed in SoCal it would be greatly appreciated.
So I am very critically comparing the handling of the 991.1 to my F80 M3 and I feel like my M3 is better balanced. Maybe since this is my first rear engine car it takes some getting used to? The biggest difference I notice is that the front end seems bouncy (especially on turns). Yes I realize the obvious reason. But I expected the Porsche to feel more planted than the M3. Can anyone that comes from a M3 to a 911 relate to this at all?

Welcome to Rennlist. There are individual forums for the different makes and models. This post should probably be in the 991 forum rather than in this Cayenne DIY one. The moderators will move it eventually but for future posts, you should enter the correct forum before clicking the "New Post" button.

How a car handles is subject to personal interpretation. The front end of the 911 will be lighter and bob up and down more than the heavier front end of the M3...that said its lightness makes the car change direction more easily. Are you running the comfort tire pressures? If the tire pressures are too high the car seems to get more bouncy. Does you car have PASM or S-PASM and what mode are your shocks in while you're driving?
The F80 M3 is a formidable car but I never found it to handle well at all. The ones I drove had plenty of grip but no feel, oversteered far too easily (and without much control) and the ride seemed underdamped. Didn't try one with the competition package though...and I am far from an expert.
Cheers,
NF

I'm not sure if I have S-PASM, I think its just PASM. Yes I tried playing around with PASM and I honestly don't notice much of a difference. The only thing that I have read so far that resonates with my experience in driving the car is that the rear end is firmly bolted down allowing it to change direction more easily. I can kind of see that. Yes the F80 feels heavier but I still feel like the F80 is more firmly planted when accelerating through a winding turn. I was on a canyon road last night pushing the Porsche a bit and was kind of surprised to hear the tires squeal a bit when I wasn't going that fast (IMO). I felt like the M3 would have been way more secure around that turn. Again maybe I just need to spend more time with the car.
I checked the PSI on it as well, my fronts are at 38 (Manufacturer says 36), one of my rears is at 44 while my other rear is at 39. Can you tell me what I should keep the PSI at for front and rear? I read in the manual something about Part Load or Full Load and it doesnt quite make sense? Not really sure what comfort setting means?

Comfort pressure is where most of us land except when on the track. You need higher pressure for extreme speeds (165 and up?) or when carrying extra weight. Full load is when carrying passengers and cargo. I check the comfort pressure box and uncheck full load box. Most of us agree that the PSI sticker on the door is far too high for normal use. I inflate to 30 front and 33 rear in my (typically) 70F garage. It increases to about 33/36 front/rear when mildly warmed up (at highway speeds and in pacific northwest temperatures). I always inflate when cold, of course.

Welcome! I made the same transition but I just think the 911 is better planted and more percise. Love, love, love M3 and all BMWs, still have one I the family.
Interesting on tire pressure. I think I am ruining 38F 44R with 20” wheels and PASM. I like the firm ride.

Those pressures are high unless you're going over 165MPH. From what I've read (admittedly I'm not expert) Porsche designs the car around the comfort PSI. It's better for handling and ride quality.
M3s are fantastic cars...F80 included. Almost bought one myself but made the mistake of trying the 911 and now I'm hooked. OP if your 911 is squealing and your M3 isn't around a turn at a moderate pace I suspect there's something wrong with the car or tires.
Cheers,

I’ve test driven the F80 few times, no way does it feel more planted than our 911GTS. It barely puts its power down without compromising traction (both CP and non-CP models). Also huge like a living room.
The E92 is heavier and slower but the engine is a pure masterpiece, that would be choice. Drove one on the Ring last month.
The E46 feels like the most mechanically connected, hugs you perfectly and communicates best.
Also love BMWs and have 2 DDs in the family.
I would gladly trade them both for another GTS though!

Covered ad nauseum. Search is your friend... as are the manual and inside door jamb.

My .2 was delivered with 44 psi all around. Rode horrible. I run 31/34, and drop that by 2 psi on the track. Hot ends up around 33/36 street, 36/39 track.
