I was stationed in Washington state for a while back in the 80's, I remember the "city to a standstill" thing when they got a little bit of snow. You were definitely taking your life in your hands by being out on the road.

Oh yeah... it is remarkable. I've piloted all kinds of equipment through some fairly fantastic weather and it never ceases to amaze me how poorly some people lose it with just a sprinkle of snow - now freezing rain, that's an entirely different beast.
Coming home from Calgary once, heading west, and rolling into Canmore, the road gave off a 'sheen' I had never seen before - almost a matte finish - curious, I pulled over (it was night), got out of the truck and promptly fell to the asphalt... the rain had built up about 3/4" of ice, perfectly layered, all the way through Banff and on to Lake Louise - it was slippery as hell, but adjusting the speed to road conditions made it reasonable to drive on. Once into Field it was pretty much gone. Neat effect though.
