OK guys, school me a bit....Have a mountain bike I enjoy riding, interested in road biking however am a bit...ahhh....husky (think defensive end or inside linebacker) and am 220# when I'm at my lightest...one of those folks that if I think about an M&M I gain weight, so use a lot of cardio (running, rowing) to just maintain and have a decent amount fo cardiovascular fitness....but have been interested in trying road biking....are there road bikes suitable to bigger guys, or do I need the pee wee herman bike with the lounger seat and it is what it is...discuss...
I'm a husky guy 6.1 and 217 lbs and ride a 58cm Cervelo Caledonia 5. Nice and clean, no visible cables.
I love road riding (about a 100 miles a week - not like Mooty who's a f*king animal ) and it definitely keeps the lbs off. https://www.cervelo.com/en_US/caledonia-5
I would stay away from any of the carbon frames & wheels if your over 180lbs.Low spoke count is also and issue with "Clydesdale" size riders.I ride with a couple of large guy's that ride alot but well over the 210lb very strong..They tend to be the very best on flat ground for drafting (see beer truck going down the highway).I do a far amount of R&D work for the bike industry.Specialized, BMC, Phil Wood ect. ect.Even with steel & aluminum frames I see these guy's break chain stays & seat stays on a regular basis.Having issues keeping wheels in true with wheels under 20 spoke count. At some point every frame will break with enhanced size riders.
rhk118 just find a good local bike shop and they can steer you in the right direction. won't need a lounger seat lol
regarding stigs post. In tip top shape I might starve myself down to 185-190. Generally around 200-205. Have ridden carbon fiber frame without a problem. Manufacturers can have top weight limits so just be aware. Wheels I agree with him although IMHO 180 is a little severe for a weight limit. Again find a good shop you can trust and go from there
hahahaha haven't had a good laugh like that in well over a week! Thanks so much for that....but heck yeah work smarter not harder....if the beer truck is bigger than me, of course I'm going to draft it, pun definitely implied! Thanks for the info guys!
All comes down to budget, if you have one...With all due respect to Stig's R&D work, carbon frame and wheels are very much in play. Depends on the layup and manufacturer. For example, I went up Haleakala a few weeks ago on a sub-13-pound FESTKA on Lightweights and descended on a custom titanium Passoni with bullet proof blasphemous rim brake carbon wheels, and I weigh around 200, but still KOM'ed the descent in most sections #sensitivesprinter I have 5,000+ miles on the wheels with zero issues.
However, a nice titanium frame with carbon disc brake wheels on 30mm at our size is sublime. Versatile and fast everywhere
Mooty, how many Cippolini's have we broke between the two of us? 3 for me...
