All this espresso talk lately has me re-looking at the 10,000's of shots pulled over the years. My machine is near 15 years old, a Salvatore (hand made in Santa Barbara, very, very simple and very robust components), bought when the state of the art was the e61 and PID wasn't really a thing on any home machine... A big boiler/heat exchanger, e61 group, all commercial components. In 15 years replaced the pump once, and just replaced the 3 way valve. My grinder is a Mazzer Mini Electronic that Ive had for about 12 years when they first came out, on it's 2nd or 3rd set of burrs now... about 50lbs a year is my guess?

I don't usually use a scale or bottomless portafilter. I'm i dunno, somewhat lazy and have pulled so many shots my eye and feel for it is pretty spot on. He did convince me to try one of those leveler things, it actually works pretty good to get a more even Tamp (I still tamp with a calibrated tamper for many, many years)

In humoring Mooty and his new found obsession, I pulled out my scales and bottomless filter, weighed dose, weighed result, timed, pretty spot on, and most important, taste good, and only one little squirt at the end so distribution was good.

The downside of my current setup: really its the temp control, requires a feel... the e61 can get very hot w/o a purge.

Of course the upgrade machine would be a GS3, Slayer, or LM Mini... I think I'm leaning to the LM Mini (what Mooty got). It works with my workflow... and maybe a Ceado grinder with 84mm burrs, not single dose, that won't work for me. :-)

Nice. Another good topic on this thread - e61, PID, etc.

We’ve had our Rocket espresso machine and Eureka grinder for 5 plus years. Still fun to play with pressures, ground size, etc. to bring out flavor profiles on the same coffee beans.
