In short, if one wants to save a clearly noticeable (when driving) amount of weight in a Porsche (i.e., the "Four" referred to above, alone, do not constitute noticeable), be prepared to spend many hundreds of thousands of dollars (and more) and do not expect any shop or tuner to have canned (ready-made) solutions as (a) they usually do not have the design or engineering expertise, (b) do not have a large enough client base to justify the cost even if they had the expertise and (c) in general, very few people have either (let alone both) the desire or the budget to eliminate hundreds (or more than a thousand) pounds from a Porsche, particularly a 911, other than an amount of weight that they can eliminate by stripping components from the vehicle which (beyond the Four) reduces creature comfort (of course, I would argue that certain exhaust modifications that increase sound also reduce such comfort) and, in many instances, reduce drivability and/or safety.

P.S. It is possible to reduce the weight of a 911 by 1000 pounds without eliminating creature comforts.
At some point I am sure your engineering exercise is going to attract the attention of Porsche (if not already) if nothing more than to evaluate with other’s money the weight savings you have accomplished. I am also sure that it is not just Porsche that will be interested. So thanks for sharing!

BTW, is 1000 pounds reduction your final end point?

There is no specific goal for the R other than more than 200 pounds. In the past, however, I have taken 1500+ pounds off another Porsche, a 964.

P.S. Noticed you have a 350R. I have ordered a Shelby GT500 with Track Pack - orange with black painted stripes.

Yes it’s a really different kind of machine somewhere a cross between my E92 M3 with the 4.0 liter V8 that revved to 8.2K and my old Grand Sport Corvette. Very different and fun. Unfortunately I’m already on engine #2 on the car- first one failed before a 1000 miles.

The GT500 with Track Pack is going to be another thing entirely, quite the HP monster!

Keep up the good work here- it’s like we get to peek into Porsche’s R&D lab with all of your efforts!

Not the best, but, given present circumstances, all that is available of the two color magnesium wheels.

Weight savings is 32 pounds. The wheels are two color - gold primary with silver stripe (to match the window trim) around the outer edge.

Robert,

Glad to see the gold finally matched? We have gotten 2 full sets that were supposedly for a crazy customer from BBS. had no doubt that was you. Luckily we were going to refinish them anyway. That gold from BBS is not very appealing...

As I often say in meetings, "What the heck do I know?" One thing, however, I do know is not to believe all of the stories I hear. As to colors, beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, e.g., Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) and many others believe that a urinal (1917, entitled Fountain) was and is great art; I, on the other hand, while recognizing the artistic significance, would rather not have that work on my living room floor.

Robert,

I know in the beginning you were talking about making kits available in small batches. Obviously things have evolved but is this still the case? Or are all these beautiful components just one-offs? I know the cost of these are hard to justify for mere mortals like me. I am just curious.

The topic has never again arisen. As such, I have assumed that no one was or is interested. Of course, if I can be of help to anyone, please contact me at 212-628-6778 or at rdlinton@verizon.net.
