In excess of a 150 pound weight reduction although new weight reduction opportunities continue to appear.

Given dark knight's suggestion, I have ordered the windshield wiper mechanism and am evaluating whether it can be redesigned in titanium or titanium/carbon fiber and the weight saving potential thereof.

Although this thread is about weight reduction, as I have said previously, good engineering should be elegant and sometimes may be seen as art. In this regard, frankly under the guise of weight reduction (though it should save a few grams), the steering wheel and the shift **** are being enhanced.

Re the steering wheel, as you can see from the first picture below, it has eight major trim components. The first, the large three spoke plastic piece, is being made as a real carbon fiber piece (as opposed to the optic carbon very used by many OEMs and aftermarket supplies, i.e., a plastic substrate covered with carbon cloth and clear coated). The second, the large almost semi-round plastic piece behind the wheel, is also being made as a real carbon piece. The six other plastic pieces, male and female (each combination, hereafter referred to as a "Unit"), at each of 3, 6 and 9 o'clock are being machined in super magnesium and will receive an appropriate black coating. Additionally, the two steel screws between the male and female part of each Unit, although real fasteners, do not actually join the Units together, but will do so in the Units, will be aluminum and will receive an appropriate black coating.

Re the shift ****, an example of which is shown "exploded" in the second and third pictures:

a. the large optic carbon fiber piece on top and running through the center of the shift **** will be remade in real carbon fiber;

b. the leather pieces will be made in Gaboon Ebony as its particular color and texture will go very well with the interior of the subject 911R;

c. the gear indicator at the top of the shift **** will be remade in super magnesium and will receive an appropriate black coating; and

d. the metal ring at the bottom of the shift **** will be remade in super magnesium and will receive an appropriately black coating.

Finally, though another thread on Rennlist, I have met Manuel who has made wonderful gear shift ***** for several people and he will be doing all of the woodwork.

In you mean inside the rim, a titanium core would increase weight and, as it would be entirely covered in leather, would have no aesthetic value either

All of my personal weight reduction was in 2018/2019, hence, no possibilities in that area.

This is the original windshield wiper mechanism for the 911R. The new one will be made with a combination of titanium, super magnesium and carbon fiber.

This might not be of interest, but I have begun to post a few pictures, not necessarily 911R related, on Instagram @RobertLinton1.

Hello Robert,

I was one of the guys who worked with Manual and he crafted this beauty. I'd be interested in seeing how your the shift **** develops. I worked with Exclusive when I was speccing my car but the wood shift **** on offer was no more than a wood veneer where you have optic carbon. Not great. I like the fact that you are making this OEM+ because lets be honest the gear shift materials are cheap & below par.

The effort is a combination of Manuel doing the Gaboon ebony **** (the hardest part) and us doing the super magnesium gear shift indicator, the super magnesium trim ring and the carbon fiber (real not optic) insert. Together, the result should be beautiful, elegant and quite unique. As to progress, all CAD work is complete, tooling for the two carbon fiber steering wheel pieces is complete, super magnesium for the eight steering wheel pieces and two shift **** pieces is being sourced as is enough totally black (i.e., no brown veins) ebony to make several *****.
