BMW M4GTS faster around the Ring as the 991GT3? (or even faster than RS?)
Hi Rennlisters,
about the M4 GTS aka "poor boy GT3 rival"
Same listprice as the 991 GT3. But fully equipped.
If you add for making the comparison fair: Clubsport, Ceramics, Navi, LED, Metalic,... which is at the M4GTS standard - the 991 GT3 will be around 20k more expansive.
///M posted their ring time - first of all --> deep respect for this. Alfa Giulia, even Porsch,... nothing official - just black on white numbers on paper; but no video proof.
AutoMotorSport Supertest laps were 7:32 with the 991GT3 and 7:28 with the 991GT3RS.

So the M4GTS with the time of 7:28 is as fast as the 991GT3RS !?
not really - cause AMS Supertest times are usually around 8sek. slower... based on not controlled conditions and only two (one) lap allowed if i remember well. But this we will see - cause for sure the M4GTS will be laped from AMS.
But hands down: A lot of guys are crying about the M4GTS is to expansive for a Bimmer / compared with a Porsch. But it is around 20k cheaper - doing the same laptimes (maybe even as the RS). The M4GTS is real limited edition of 700 worldwide.
It is a pimped saloon/coupe car, developed with "big" restrictions in terms of "Baukasten-System" (///M have to keep the base of the BMW AG models... no own engines anymore and so on...). Porsche / the GT3 is a Sportscar - started on a blank sheet of paper.
In Rennlist i always have the feeling that we are able to discuss without big emotions and without fanboy arguments. Each time this verifies as soon Mci (675LT) or Ferrari (Speciale) pops up. Based on this i started this thread.
Whats your thoughts?

the video make it really seems like there would be another 5 sek possible.
super calm steering and driving. but ok thats the secret.
suspension setting seems perfect for the ring + perfect "engineer" (RaceCarDriver) job
superb

GTR did it in 7.24. Stock ZR1 did it in 7:19. 2010 Dodge Viper ACR did it in 7:12. God only knows what the new ACR can do..
Of course all those cars have up to and over 600hp. What surprises me is that a 444 hp M4 was able to beat a 500 hp 911. They must have really lightened up that GTS, because stock weight is somewhere around 500b heavier than the RS.
In that context, it's an impressive time. Unfortunate looking car though. Dealer markups are similarly large on these cars as well.
EDIT: Looks like the GTS is ~3300 lb with 493 hp.

sadly very likely , the up side they won't be seen spanking GT3's on track
I've had two M cars , I wouldn't go back for this one, although the 4 years BMW pays all thing I do miss
awesome video and driving and definitely not 5 seconds left on the table

Wow, that is indeed impressive.....
I have raced BMW's for over 15 years prior to Porsches and I can say without a doubt that the BMW chassis is one of the easiest cars to race!

I have two M cars - older ones - and got a current GT3 instead of an M4, although the GTS was possible. I don't regret it in the least though I expect it is a superb performance car. The 'Ring speed is a marketing tool and little else. It ignores the character and ethos and to some extent even the engineering of a car in favour of a single best effort numerical comparison which is only genuinely objective if conditions and driving skills are the same across all comparators, and if the results are thoroughly repeatable. Even then, it says little about a car's enjoyability on the street. The Nordschleife isn't very much like most streets...or tracks for that matter.

I had an old E90 M3 and I think the new M cars are all just horrible.
This new edition continues the downward spiral of BMW's M division.
In a few years I expect the GT division to see similar decline.
I hope I am proven wrong though...

I agree - unfortunately the new M cars are turbo, soul less, and less than inspiring. I'm praying the porsche gt cars do not follow suit.
