Correct. The "lockup" period does not apply to the cars bought via the VIP program but to the 918 itself. If they sell the 918 early, they lose the VIP program and future privileged allocations. I heard this many times from my GM.

That's very interesting. There is a 918 at my dealership (Porsche of Plano) that will sit there for 5 more months because of that reason. It is already "sold" for a second customer but the owner doesn't want to lose upcoming allocations.

This is straight from a 918 owner that was intro'ed to me from a friend--sounds like there is a disconnect with 918 owners:
Hey Paul -
I am a 918 VIP customer so I will get a GT3 RS I must keep it for six months before I can sell it. If you would like to commit to that car I will be happy to let you have my allocation and we can talk about speccing it for you. There is no PTS at this time.

"Nice to hear from you. The allocations are NOT assignable in the US - you would have to order and keep for a period (6 months I think)."
Back when Daniel Eastman was the 918 Relationship manager, he told prospective clients the following about the VIP program in broad terms:
"Besides the car itself he talked about Porsche's VIP program for 918. For those who buy and keep the car for 6 months have first right of refusal for any new car for 3 years. (If they keep the 918) for 3 years, they will have 10 years (VIP Treatment in the program). This includes specialty cars and even GT Cup cars if they want. They have sold 50 GT3's in a 24hr period with this program. They will also have access to very exclusive events. This will only be available to the first owners."
Take it all with a grain of salt. But I do believe there is a lock-up period on any purchase via the 918 VIP Program. Otherwise, it would encourage anyone buying a car via the program to become a serial 'flipper'. And that would run counter to the spirit of what the VIP program was set up to do. And the six month lock up is most likely enforced by the threat of losing any future VIP allocation via the program if you violate its rules or guidelines.

i don't recall any of the documentation spelling out a lockup period. Allocations are definitely NOT assignable.
Also I spoke to David Donahue about getting a 991 cup car and he checked with Posche Motorsports and the only way I could get a new one is if I raced it, like anybody else interested in one.
I think there is a lot of here say and "rules" made up on the fly by whomever one asks. On the other hand the program might not have been completely thought through on its initiation and rules are perhaps being made up on the fly!
