Hi.
I bought IRWIN QUICK-GRIP 18 but I can not turn the clamps in the opposite direction.
Can anyone who has the product explain to me? Thanks

The clamps simply slide off the rails and you can flip it the opposite direction. Push the lock on the bottom of the clamp and slide the clamp to the end. Then you should be able to slide off and flip around.

Hey
When releasing the Center lock, the wheels should be on the floor (In “P” level gearbox and with depressed brake pedal), in the plane (when releasing using the Breaker Bar Handle) right?

Only after a slight release should I lift the car in the air, using a lift or jack and disassemble the center lock and wheels, right? (The tightening of course is done by tightening from the mount when the wheels of the vehicle must be in the air with a depressed brake pedal)

THX

That's not how I do it. It should be off the ground. Where did you read this?

The torque tightening must be when the vehicle is in the air! It is written in all vehicle books.
The steps are:
1. Lift the vehicle in the air.
2. Pressed brake.
3. Tightening at 600nm torque.
4. Release 60 degrees (about a quarter turn).
5. Tighten the torque again to 600 nm.
6. Loosen the locking screw.
7. You're done.

My question is about disassembling the wheels. Was the disassembly also done with the wheels in the air or not?

My understanding is that you should never tighten nor loosen the centerlock bolt while the wheels are supporting the weight of the car - I think this is to mitigate risk of applying any unequal pressure around the conical mating surfaces of the wheel and centerlock bolt.

It makes sense.
But I'm looking for an unequivocal answer.
I just see a lot in Porsche garages as well, that the initial release they do is that the wheels of the vehicle are on the floor. And after that lift the vehicle and release the Center Lock by hand and disassemble the Wheels ..
Thoughts ..

I’ve seen that done too, but I never do that myself and I do my best to prevent anyone other than me using the centerlocks on my car (i.e. I always take wheels off myself before having tires changed, etc)

Thank you all. I understand that it is best to disassemble the wheels in the air with a brake applied.
If anyone thinks he has something to add I would appreciate it.

Greetings - I posted on another old center lock thread but cannot find it and this one is covering some of the same issues/how to's/complaints. I will soon have to deal with the Porsche/VW center lock design. I had always wanted to know how the Mclaren center lock (used on very few of their cars) worked for comparison. A video has finally been posted on youtube showing it in some detail for comparison. It's similar - but different.

I am not an expert but it seems like it might create a stronger connection? But also most importantly - you torque it down once to 600nm's ONCE. No backing off going back again. But what do I know - what do you guys think?

Looks pretty annoying…. I wouldn’t say either system looks like a picnic to me…

Based on that video, I would say the Porsche CL system is more user-friendly. Yes, the torque and re-torque is annoying, but the Porsche locking device is nicely integrated and seems to be less trouble than the McLaren, where you need to use a special tool just to insert/remove the locking device and you need to fiddle-f*ck around with getting it to engage both the spindle and the nut.

With the Porsche, the special nut automatically disengages the lock and the lock remains in place inside the spindle.

(IMO the CL system's bark is worse than its bite: It's intimidating, but once you have the tools it's no harder or more time-consuming than a 5-lug wheel.)

100% agreed. Very intimidating for me and i thought i broke the nut the first time i removed it. In fact it helped me under the CL components and how to disassemble/reassemble. After that it all becomes second hand and easy. Anyone can do it!
