Or perhaps a credit to the others? We're comparing cars that are all stunning performers. GT-R is a tech masterpiece, regardless of whether one subjectively likes it. Z06 benefits from huge muscle, and having front engine with RWD has some benefits in terms of making a car easier to drive.

As long as we are speculating, here's my prediction. It will take a year or so, maybe more, to bear out. But, I expect Porsche to follow it's normal course of business:

1. RS3.8 launched next: Same engine, little or no power increase, big wing, wider fenders, less content (i.e., reduced weight) and a large premium. My guess is the premium will be larger than in the past this time. 200K+ MSRP with more limited production to justify the price.

2. RS 4.0 or hybrid (ala 918): Same as 3.8, with more power, and an even larger price. I'd expect this closer to the end of the 991 RS's lifespan.

Just my $0.02. But, the key is to offer ever more exclusive models to get suckers like me to buy another car and get rid of a perfectly good one.

I find it humerous that they mention this car being only 20 seconds slower than a 918. In that same vein, why not say it's 5 seconds faster than the GT3? 20 seconds slower sounds a lot worse in comparison to 5 seconds faster

Agreed, 20 seconds is a big *** gap among cars that are already under 7:30!

My money is still on a 4.0 now, given the engine problems on the GT3, I would be very surprised if they push it further still.

So for me it's RS with a 4.0L now and then an GT3 RS Hybrid with a 4.0L.

Seems to also line up with current Motorsports line up, GT3 = GT3 Cup (3.8L), GT3 RS = GT3 RSR (4.0L), GT3 RS Hybrid = GT3 R Hybrid (4.0L + Electric).

The articles are likely circular and reference one another; tough to find better info than you can here (although you have to sift and consider the source!)

When has a 911 ever been as fast as the top dog GTR or Corvette? Nothing new.

Can anyone tell me why the GT-R is so fast despite being so much heavier?

My bet is 4.0. The problem with the engine was under promising con rod screw that was optimized and fixed.

I am figuring 515 hp

The NISMO car isn't yet a production car and NISMO has said that customers will be able to buy one like the one they setup for the ring for "less than $200k".

Coming from a track prepped GTR I drove for a few years, there's certainly something to say about AWD and how much it helps with lap times. The 2014 model allegedly lapped the 'Ring in 7:18 which is roughly 6 seconds faster than the earlier R35 models with 65 less hp. The car understeered when pushed too much, but suspension & sway bar updates helped dial that out a great deal. Trans & oil temps were handled with aftermarket coolers. And it was rather simple to get 550 awhp & 560 ft-lb with just a Cobb AP. Although the GTR is a tuner's dream whereas the GT3 (RS) are pure cars from the factory.

As for the C6 Z06, I'd also add that the 7:19 time was with the Z07 package so it had amazing cup tires and ceramic brakes. But, let's not forget about the marvel in its magnetic suspension. There's a reason why Ferrari adopted it for the foundation of its suspension.

RS debut in Paris would be a great way to steal Fiat and Lambo's thunder...

We know the car is ready and the bulk of remaining GT3 allocations should be spoken for by that time.

Time to feed the rumor mill....

"A new report indicates the upcoming Porsche 911 GT3 RS has lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 20 seconds.

Porsche's highly anticipated 911 GT3 RS has apparently completed a lap of the 'Ring in 7:20 which makes it a full 13 seconds quicker than the previous generation model 997 GT3 RS (4.0 version). If this rumor turns out to be true, it means the new GT3 RS is actually only two seconds slower than the more focused 911 GT2 RS (997).

Power is believed to come from an uprated naturally-aspirated six-cylinder 3.8-liter engine outputting as much as 500 PS (368 kW) in a body that should weigh less than 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs) whereas the regular GT3 has 475 PS and weighs 1,430 kg (3,152 lbs).

The diet will be possible by removing the rear seats and installing several body parts made like the roof, hood and fenders from carbon fiber reinforced polymer. In addition, the front seats could be borrowed from the 918 Spyder, Porsche's range-topping model which lapped the 'Ring in 6:57.

We will find out for sure if the lap time is true in less than three weeks as Porsche is expected to show the new 911 GT3 RS at the Paris Motor Show."
