Disclaimer: I'm so badly addicted to the track, and fast cars in general, that I'm not capable of describing what it's like to be "car sober". So, take what I say to be on par with what any other addict tells you.

I will admit that if I didn't win tires, I'd still buy brand new slicks for every weekend. Are they addicting, probably so. If you can run a track car without succumbing to the slicks, your wallet will be better off.

On a positive note, ABS cures the flat spot issue. I bought a used unit for $5K.

I didn't include amortization of the engine (and tranny) because, for the comparison, you also need to consider depreciation on the RS. I think a tracked RS with miles on it is going to depreciate a fair amount as well. Which one will depreciate more? I'm not sure. But, to your point, the Cup engine and tranny are expensive to fix.

I still don't think the cost is going to be appreciably different once you add in the safety aspect and the relatively lower cost of a used Cup as a track car. But, maybe I just have more yahoos to deal with out here on the West Coast.

Some updates. This article claims a Paris reveal.
I didn't go back all 120 pages of this thread but I thought I had read a much wider front track (along with the wider turbo body) and front fenders had vents in them like RSRs of days past? It appears they have ditched that idea, that would have been a awesome look.

So 1.1% more speedy (which is well within a single-driver's margin of deviation or the difference between 20% and 50% cycled out tires) for 100% more spendy? Where do I sign?

The larger wing and hips are worth at least $50k...

If it's 5 seconds difference at the 'ring, I translate that to about 1 second at a more typical track with a lap time around 1:30. Yeah, if that's really the number, not worth paying a lot of extra cost. You can drop the lap time more than that just by going from the MPSC2 to a semi-slick tire.

Est8esq has found stock MPSC2 to be faster than 19" Hoosiers. Not saying it's definitive, but we have not yet seen a semi-slick r comp beat the Sport Cup 2 on the 991 GT3.

Personally I like the looks of the 991 GT3 better than all the leaked 991 GT3 RS pics, 5 seconds on the ring is in the noise, RS needs to be in the mid teens to differentiate. Perhaps this is part of the reason we keep hearing GT3 production will not run concurrently with GT3RS production.

Or RS could decrease.

If it is 4.0, the torque will be increased by definition. With normally aspirated motors of similar design, the torque is almost perfectly proportional to displacement. So the extra 5.3% displacement will increase torque by an amount very close to that.

If I get an RS allocation (I should buy a lottery ticket that day) I will get it just for the heck of it. My turbo or upcoming GT3 is probably a better car for the street for me.

The track is fun, but in someone else's car. At least for me.

It's nice to be among like minded people.

Hmmmm. Wondering how many times we have to have the RS vs Cup running costs discussion before it sinks in.

Net, net, ex the trans there is no difference when run like for like. Same motor (ex the vario cam, which is just an additional thing that can fail on RS), same suspension ex stiffer spring/shock combo. Run your RS on the track like a Cup - high %throttle with slicks - and watch your motor and suspension time out just like a Cup. The only a reason a Cup motor is more expensive to rebuild is because most want to keep the spec classification and hence are hostage to PMNA rebuild premium.

Those that have tried know, those that haven't don't.

Has anyone been running a 6 or 7 Cup on softer springs, less aggressive alignment, and Nittos or Hoosiers?

May be worth exchanging the street driveability of my 6gt3 for the increased safety and performance of a track-only but softened Cup + add a Boxster S/GTS for top-less back-road fun.

I was being optimistic and referring to the "original" rumored price that floated around for the last year (~$185k). Nissan charges ~$70k more for 10 sec less on the 'ring so it's not mind boggling for Porsche to charge a premium. I'm certainly no pro on the track, but I'd assume comparing 'ring times is a challenging feat given ambient temps, track temps, etc., and of course the length of the 'ring.

In the end, I'm a fan of any engineering feat that makes a car faster. In the case of the RS, I'm appreciative of the drop in time as a result of engineering instead of just adding a bunch of power (a la +200hp in the Z06).

Interesting. If true, the tires would account a significant chunk of the surprise factor in the 991 GT3's brisk performance. OTOH, I tried the Dunlop Sport Maxx Race, which are supposed to be as fast as the MSPC2, on a couple of cars, and found them to be not quite as fast as the NT01, which isn't as fast as the R6. So I'm not sure what to make of this ...
