Trakcar.
I was referring to 4.0RS current pricing vs bog standard 991 GT3 when I said 250k v 135k. But 188k v 118k (or whatever the 3.8 GT3 non RS was when launched in USA in 2009) is proabably a fairer way to look at it.
In NZ we paid 410k USD for 2011 4.0RS (2 in NZ) and 240k USD for 09 3.8 GT3 (6 in NZ).
In terms of Australia pricing then dont go to NZ as its more expensive than Australia LOL!
Infact Australia seems cheap now there currency has depreciated 12% against the Greenback in the last 8 weeks - imagine then how much it would have cost earlier in the year!
In truth tho my wife and I spend 3 months a year travelling (usually 5-6 countries) for leisure (dont read the 4 hour working week or this is what happens!) and we find the USA the cheapest place in the world for basically everything from houses and cars to food and clothes - basically everything seems very cheap in the USA. It does help our currency has been strong against the USD over these last 5 years I must admit. That may change in the future I think...

Ryan, my post is focused on performance only. Who does and doesn't want the GT3 is their personal choice. Performance will matter more to some, less to others, especially those who will track their high performance cars. Nothing wrong with a miata, but not my cup of tea to be honest.
I think the Z06 is a more pure car than the ZR1 so I agree that the Z could get more of a connection with the drivers, being lighter and more responsive. But like you, since I have a track car already, I prefer the ZR1 as an intimidating beast of a fun street car, and it looks better (wider, lower, CF etc.). And from what I can tell, the ZR1 is more reliable.

I owned a 2009 Z06, one of the first 2009's - delivered in late 2008, and I currently own a 2010 ZR1. I owned the Z06 for just under 3 years and have now owned the ZR1 for over 2 years. I have driven both cars on the track both with and without an instructor.
My Z06 was similar to the one Jan Magnussen ran on the ring for a 7:42.99 without the Magnetic Selective Ride Control, the Carbon Ceramic Brakes, slightly smaller wheels and no aero additions. My ZR1 has all those features and a bunch of additional carbon fiber parts just like the one Jim Mero ran on the ring for a 7:19.63.
Before I sold my Z06 I was completely punch drunk over the ZR1, I was convinced it was better in every way over the Z06. Now having some experience with both cars I can say I found the Z06 more endearing. To me the steering felt a little sharper, the steering tune on the ZR1 is almost too light. The Z06 small block 7.0 litre motor makes such a wonderful noise as you wind it up to the 7000 RPM redline !
Now that I've rambled on a bit, my point is just because a ZR1 or a Viper ACR is may be faster on the Nurburgring or the Grand Course at VIR doesn't mean that I want it more than a GT3. I'll be replacing my ZR1 with the GT3.
I realized I'd never put a cage in the ZR1 and I'm old enough to realize that I don't have to be the one to make a mistake at the track for my track day to end very, very badly. So for track days, I bought a dedicated track car - I've got thick skin so you can poke fun if you like when I tell you it's a Spec Miata. My track car requirements started with Safe and ended with Cheap / Plentiful so if it gets wadded up at the track, I'll buy another one and not miss a beat.
On a separate note, I'm not aware of any of the magazine formal tests where they put all the cars on the same tire. Is there one that I should be watching for?

Macca,Mike...I think it's great to be an early adopter, nothing wrong with that. As you've said, with this car it looks like you're either an early adopter or you won't own it at all. Not to mention test driving it...so out of curiosity as a car guy,I'll be looking forward to your reviews and opinions.
Even though I still complain once in a while,I've come to peace in taking the car for what it is...Personally,I do not think Porsche will make the mistake of not tying this engine to motorsport somehow, they've pushed too many buttons already with the radical decisions they've made with this new car.

The thruth is frayed,we have 6-7 early adopters enthusiasts on this forum, but the rest of those filling the over so crowded dealer lists do not post here,do not care, maybe some will read Rennlist... They like to show up at C&C with a big wing or at the dealer gatherings in full race suit wasting technicians precious time asking for a quart of oil to top off their ride. Believe you me,I've seen them!!! This forum will be really boring without the so called " detractors ". I'd rather read Wanna's posts or Nizer's and learn something. They make it interesting!
ps. If anyone has a perfect 430 Scuderia and wants a no nonsense buyer, now's your chance, by this time next week, I need to pull the trigger or put the cash in the coffee tin on the back shelf of the kitchen cupboard.

Hi Jimmy. Yeah cant believe how expensive your cars are. Two NZ friends have now sold their Porsches to Australian buyers becuase even the used pruces there are high and your currency has been strong.
What I meant sorry is the cost of living in NZ is higher than Australia (power, houses, fuel, insurance, clothes etc) and right now the USD isnt as strong against the NZD as it is against the AUD. I earn AUD, have AUD CC and accounts so Im feeling the pain too...
PS. All Porsches in Australia/NZ were dropped in price a few months back when I was over for Rennsport Weekend - so how much is the list in the 991 GT3 now? It dropped 15% in NZ over the 3.8.2 GT3...which has caused some consternation for owners who have just bought their cars in the last 2-3 years...we have seen 3 x 3.8 GT3 and 2 x GT3RS come on the market in the last few weeks at around 160k AUD and the RS for around 195k AUD...

hi macca,
yeah, the prices were dropped i think, about 10%, across the range.
not sure how much the list is on the 991gt3 but would think that it would be close to A$270k. with some extra alcantara/paint/yellow calipers.. will certainly go over $300k on the road.
i wasn't aware that the cost of living in nz is higher than aus.
it's pretty damn high as it is. are one bedder units in auckland/wellington upwards of $500k? close to the city here, they are between $500-$650k

Hi Jim. I get to experience both economies and apart from cars and high end property NZ is what I call The Switzerland if the Pacific! A nice one bedroom granny flat in a good street/inner city suburb will put back 450k now. Auckland is having a property boom right now so prices are rising monthly.
We earn on average less than in Australia but the average Auckland median house price is now 500k NZD. You dont get much for that. Infact you dong get much below 2 mill really!
Looks like your P-Cars are still around 12-15% more than ours. I guess you guess still have tariffs/duties on cars where as we have none!
I got stick of it and ordered my RHD 991 GT3 from Europe saving around 20% so I can own it a year or two without depreciation. Of course that was when the AUD was strong against the Euro...

I can't say I've lived in all those cities, but I've woken up in all except Newcastle without knowing where I was or how I got there. I'd suggest Bathurst long before Newcastle. Great Ocean Road, Torquay and Bells Beach rather than Bendigo and Ballarat. Get to Warrnambool and have a burger at Kermond's, then back along the coast to Melbourne and Phillip Island. Just don't try to tip anyone except the taxi drivers. : )
