I think they can definitely base this new car on the Cayman.

It would have been nice to hear more on-track commentary from Randy Pobst and to see what kind of times he could wring out the new Cayman around Laguna. Even better if they had fitted the Cayman with a set of MPSC’s, and then compared lap times back-to-back with a 991S with the same tires on the same day.

Car and Driver did a same-day comparo a while back of a previous generation Cayman R and a 997 GT3, but they ran the Cayman on significantly inferior tires, rendering the comparison almost pointless.

That would've been interesting to see.

I can only imagine what " monster " Porsche would unleash giving the Cayman a wider track, better suspension, better brakes and 600 HP!

It'll be called the 960, and will sell for $250K

But in the meantime, maybe BGB or Rick Deman will get hold of a 475HP, 9000 RPM GT3/9A1 crate motor, drop it into the engine bay of Cayman, add some aero, dial in some camber, bump up the size of the rotors and let her rip.

Ill take the BGB special, probably lighter faster and much cheaper.

Wouldnt a larger Cayman be called the Purussaurus?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purussaurus

Say "Porsche Purussaurus w/ a Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe" really fast!

Try this: Rennstreckenfahren mit einen Porsche Purussaurus mit Porsches Doppelkupplungsgetriebe
Translation: Racing a large Porsche Cayman with a PDK.

...English is so much easier than German.... Why don't they speak English in Germany?!

Imo, a real sport car, with no compromise, must have the engine at the right place, (i.e.: in the middle).
Sure, a 911 is a good sport car, ..but after 30 years non stop and hundreds of thousand miles of driving in a few of them, I’m still convinced that it is only a (great) compromise, ..to have room in the back of the front seats.

Another “compromise” is to have the engine in the front, which left some comfy room in the back to put some belongings. After a threshold of available volume, then, you can call such a car a “GT”, (Grand Tourism, or ..good enough to be able to travel with your car and take with you the stuff you want without a serious computing of volume management.

The problem of the real sport cars (the ones that have the engine at the right place), is that they pretty much all become “PT” (Petit Tourism), i.e.: Just “good” for doing a “petit tour” around the block, ..or going to the track, or may be ..simply, to show it to the neighbors.
Have you tried to put 2 golf bags in a car like an Audi R8 or in an MP4-12C ?
No way. Can you go to Costco with an R8 or a Gallardo… : I do not think so.

Now the answer to the question of the topic could be shifted into some new questions, like : is a real sport car really usable on the daily roads these days, I mean by that, driving it ..and keeping your driving license ? (to drive it some more)
And also, is a real sport car of today good (light enough) to be very good on track days ?

These are not easy questions, but, on my side, I tend to say, on tracks, the lightest is your car, the more fun you have. While on the roads, the best car is most probably quite different than the best one on tracks !

In my opinion, the secret of the success of the 911 relies in the best compromise, i.e.: you have room in the back to take or pick-up stuff. You can go to Costco and still be OK to return home not frustrated.

For sure, a mid engine Porsche will find customers. How many Cayman R were sold ?
I think a 961 will be a “super” Cayman R !
..to fight with the 458, the MP4-12C, the Gallardo, ..and the R8 !
But.. It is already a very crowded place ! (And, imo, for a “limited” use.)

My opinion :
Why Porsche is not playing a bit simpler, and offer a Boxster and a Cayman with a “GT3” sauce ?
This would open a new field that is not occupied yet, and, as it is anyway a car that will only find a limited market, why not filling it with “something” that has already all the (good) components in stock at the factory !

..my two cents !

Anyway, it looks like BMW, a car for the front engine specialists, is also looking for a making a “real” sport car !
I have seen “that” in the Nürburgring last week, and it looks definitively like a mid engine machine, so, may be one more model in that already crowded field !)

I think you are spot on! Porsche should come with a more hardcore Cayman (allthough it would be a very close opponent to a 991 GT3) and another thing I think Porsche should do is revive the 928. A big front engined GT wit 4 proper seats and bootspace. Panamera Coupe?? Something like that.... A BMW 6-series coupe opponent.

I bet the Boxsters and Caymans have more usable/accessible space than a 911. And we're talking sports cars here -- get a Bentley if you need space for two golf bags. The secret of 911's success is simply marketing and branding.

IMO, if Porsche doesn't make their main sports car platform mid-engined soon and on their own, they will be forced to do so by the competition.

Here's an interesting video I found today in another forum here, asking "experts" to compare the Cayman to the 911:

The whole discussion about 991 vs Cayman is bull****... You buy a 911 because it's a 911. Cayman is definitely the better sportscar when it comes to layout, but it is not a 911. The usabillty of the 911 as an allround sportscar is unbeaten for 50 years now. Cayman doesn't even come close, allthough it is a amazing car. You just cannot compare them IMO.
911 is an icon, like the Corvette is, or the MINI or Beetle. They have heritage and that is one very big part of the appeal those cars have.
