Was playing golf with a patent attorney friend today and we were discussing the situation about how secretive they have been about this.
He had a different perspective... Maybe there is something very proprietary involved and Porsche is remaining quiet to protect their intellectual property... Just something I found interesting.

Apparently more Engine Fires have occurred on 991 Carreras than 991 GT3s.
So why can GT3s not be driven, while Carrera loaners can?
Interesting that most Engine fires closely follow oil changes or additions.
IMHO, this makes the posting by mtony on Rennlist Jan. 22nd of Oil being added too quickly,
overflowing onto the engine and igniting look very plausible.
“I’ve done an oil change on my own 911S and after filling up with fresh oil I realized that it was very easy to spill oil over the engine and exhaust system without noticing. The oil filler spout is very slow to accept the oil, so if you keep pouring, you can pour oil around the spout and onto the engine/exhaust below. If your funnel is as large as the spout, you won't notice the oil overflowing because of the plastic housing that covers everything but the top of the spout. I noticed it when the oil started dripping under the car. Very difficult to clean up too. I wonder if this has anything to do with these fires.”

That doesn't surprise me. Do they have your car or do you have it? I think ours are the only ones they've delivered so far, so unless they have yours they don't have any GT3's to "inspect" OR "joy ride".

By now Porsche knows the problem and fix. It appears only a limited number of cars are affected. Otherwise Porsche would not be collecting data and test driving the cars.
I suspect many cars will be released this week. The next big issues for Porsche is how do they go about compensating owners whose cars are released and how drastic is the fix for the cars affected. If too drastic since a limited number are affected maybe a buy back is in order or engine replacement.
My understanding is those who have April or May build dates are being backed up to possibly July.

Nick, if my car that has stopped in production on 2/14 will be pushed back to July they can keep it and I will take a 2015 or get another Ferrari.
Let's see what next weeks call brings.

My car was supposed to exit production 3-7. They moved it to 4-4. If they move it to July they can keep it. They are not going to put a '14 on me in July.

- I'm very doubtful he was joyriding. Senior techs with a lot of experience are paid well, and have access to essentially every new porsche at some point. They aren't GT3 weenies wanking off at the sight of a new GT3. . . it's just another 911 to them. If a valet or car wash kid then a different story.
- I'm an intellectual property atty, and IMO the gag order has nothing to do with legalities but rather safeguarding the company's goodwill/brand until a proper press release can be made. In this respect, the intended audience isn't us, but the mainstream press. The rampant speculation in these threads is a tiny fraction of the buying public; a small niche. How the automotive press responds is the key here.
- Willing to bet he was driving it to get the ECU to reset after a reflash.
LOL@ you guys freaking out regarding the tech driving the car. It's not like the tech banged his wife.

If you had an earlier production date which was changed to a later date, I would assume that date would be good. I was addressing those who had an initial production date i late April or May. Did not mean to mislead you.
