Spidee - This is exactly why I like the Elise as a track car; your have to work hard to go really fast
It is very rewarding. In my 993TT or my previous C5Z06, it was too easy to drive fast. Not boring, but not nearly as rewarding.
It really is funner to drive a "slow car fast".
Now the Cayman S isn't exactly a slow car, but it isn't super fast either so it falls into the same category.
However, now and then, it is fun to drive a really fast car

I saw my first Cayman S on the road the other day. I will say that it is a nice looking car. I did not like the Boxster tail lights a lot but all in all it was much nicer looking car than a Boxster. I think I like the 911's looks a little better but they are very close. Now if it had 450hp under the hood I would be seriously considering one.

If they went back to a front engine, rear transaxle cofiguration like they started with the 924/944's and then which was in turn copied by the 'vette", then I think that they'd be on to something again.

Frankly - I need to see the durability of the new Z06 before I would make a move - I get nervous buying a "track ready" car when the GM puts 12 pads on the front calipers but it race teams use simpler AP systems - It smells funny. Not a track setup for me.

Yep - not sure why GM skimpted since it says it went all the way with a Dry sump - no coil overs, no track brakes....is it still such a great deal as a DE car? Hopefully the motor is is a solid as GM says.
I will wait patiently by the sidelines and stick to my p-car and d-car (Viper).

with regard to your viper (not to challenge your car vs. z07) but i was told they all have overheating gearboxes needing external oil coolors for it and the brake is less than steller, is that so? i have rode in vipers, awesome car, but sure isn't easy to drive!

Talk about the front pads on the Z06...I was at the auto show yesterday and a guy had a new Z06. He said that a set of front brake pads from GM are currently going for around $650.

I was too lazy to read through 10 pages of posts, thus the end-around question.
How does one access the Cayman engine? Can it be accessed from the top or is all service from beneath?
A friend just bought one and I asked how they access the engine for service. Being new, he didn't know. It wasn't obvious how the topside interior trim comes off, if at all.
Thanks,
Sherwood

"Bottom line is that Z06 dealers were arrogant"
Thats so true, I was considering buying a Z06 before I bought my 997 S. The one turnoff: the salesman. I think it has to due with the fact that, they (the salesmen) are not used to dealing with high $$ cars, so when they get one thaey act like they should be charging tickets just to look at the thing.

Sherwood: The engine is serviced from below. One can access the top of the engine by removing the plate cover, then the plate, but one can't get to much from the top.

Sherwood: Black plastic and rubber hoses mostly. Some Cayman owners at caymanclub.net are trying to get up a group buy on a clear plastic top engine cover (a la Ferrari), but I see no reason to show off the Cayman's plastic and hoses.

In a perfect world, I'd have a C6 Z06 *and* the Cayman S.

There was no 2005 Z06. C5 Z06 2001-2004, C6 Z06 2006-present
Both are great but different cars. I loved my 2002 Z06 and my current 911 C4S. The Z makes the 911 seem slow, but p-cars have great steering feel, nicer interiors and better quality.
The Cayman S/Boxster S are great cars. The C6 Z06 has amazing performance. I test drove it back to with a Ferrari F430 and its just as fast. Only a Ford GT that I drove was slightly faster.
I haven't driven a base C6 yet, but thats even more of a bargin, 400hp for $45k vs. the Z06's 500hp for $75k.
You can't go wrong with a vetter or any p-car. Both are great choices
