Unfortunately it has to be an auto due to other members of the house that can't drive MT. I was initially looking at the 987.2 variety solely because of the PDK but since this is intended to be a 4th car for just fun drives on the weekend I thought I'd save the $15-20K by getting a Tip car.

Reserve is off and may be a decent deal for someone not concerned with mileage/PDK.....2:50 to go

Hold out for a PDK. If I were you, I would not obsess over an S 3.4. You could find a 2.9 PDK in the price range of the car you found, and I believe that a 2.9 PDK with three times the mileage on that car would still be a better car. More-reliable and maybe just as fast.

Agreed. Hold out for PDK. Get the smaller engine if you have to. Way less of a compromise having PDK if you have to have auto than an old slushbox.

The mileage and ownership history look good but based on recent sales for both 6MT and tiptronic this seems to be $5-6K too much. I'm sure part of that is due to being sold from a Porsche dealer but after sitting for more than 3 months I'd expect to see more movement on the price.

2006 Cayman S

Tiptronic
BiXenons
Power Seats
Heated Seats

If this is the wrong location I can certainly post elsewhere but wanted to try in this topic first. Appreciate any feedback or thoughts from the group.
If auto is required, I'd go 987.2 base PDK. The 2.9L might not sing as nicely in higher RPMs as a 987.1 S, but it will be more engaging than an earlier S model with Tiptronic and MUCH more reliable. Since none of these are straight-line cars, the engagement is really more important than power, and the PDK wins that easily over Tiptronic.

Default 70K Miles 2006 Cayman S - Good Buy or Avoid?

I'm looking at a couple of 2006 Cayman S with 70K miles on them. Both cars are clean and have some service records, but maybe not all. Am I good to proceed with buying and enjoying or am I inviting trouble? What are the chances I'm buying a car ready to need a lot of work? IMS has not been done on either. Basic maintenance only on both from what I can tell, but both in good condition and seem cared for. Thanks for your feedback.

That one was 90k without a manual or buckets. Yikes. I will be curious how it shakes out now.

Current owner is going to have to account for 1000 very expensive miles IMO.

Cayman R pricing is absurd to me, paying huge premium for a car that is really only an suspension upgrade away is nuts to me. Yeah I know the R has a few other tweaks, (aluminum door skins, no door pockets, no instrument hood, 10 undetectable hp, standard aero pack, BS wheels) but this was a 4K spread new. It makes no sense as a 30K spread used.

I tend to agree with you, but for those who don't modify their cars or have some desire for something "extra" or rare, it obviously has some value. Also any "last of the X" Porsches now command some premium. I think the wheels they offered on the Spyder and R are phenomenal. I salivated over an Aqua Blue R that was for sale here some years back with silver accents. There's no doubting it would have much more presence than any normal 987.2 S. Could you piece together something better yourself? Probably? Were carbon brakes offered on the 987.2 S? Then add some bucket seats, aluminum doors, some subtle aero parts, a nice set of coilovers which would be better than the R suspension, and some R/Spyder wheels or custom wheels. It all starts to sound sort of expensive. But you're still right in the end just getting a 45k 987.2 S and throwing some mods into it you're probably in better bang for buck territory than an R, but those tweaks done well can add up pretty quickly.

There's also the different psm/dme software the R has. And the doors are identical to the full aluminum doors/door panels off the GT3RS.
Imho it's very similar to the premium that's happening to the RS Americas. Similar changes and low numbers from the factory. (563 for the US)
There is a very rare one for sale right now with Dark Blue Metallic, PCCB and Carbon Buckets. I'll post it in the other thread.

Yes they were offered on the 987.2 S, I've never seen them on the 2.9L car, so I'm thinking they weren't offered there. Same for the bucket seats, they were a IIRC $2700 option on the Cayman S. LSD was also optional. Aero Kit was also available on the S.
