Default 968 Option Codes

Googling, I found the following link to a great Porsche Option Code Decoder: http://www.kindel.com/Porsche/options.asp
It's for more than the 968 but is not comprehensive.

Below is another listing of codes...however it is also incomplete for the 968. There were lots of codes. Does anyone have a more comprehensive code listing for the 968? What about paint codes for the '93-'95 cars?

For example, my '94 Coupe is black and I don't recognize the paint code on the option code sticker (it's near the backside of the deck lid, above the spare tire, under the carpet). Either that, or I don't recognize the paint code. Code numbers on my car that I haven't yet deciphered are:

110 ?
428 ?
M4443 ?
G4400-10 ?

Below is the other list. Any additions?

H2, send me a PM if you like put I have a 968-specific database of paints and option codes that i can help you with. As for some of your questions:

1) Option code 428 - I'll bet it is 438 which is full power seat- left side.

2) There are multiple production paint codes for the same color. This is largely due to a change to water based paints. Black is one of them. Although the sales code is always A1 the production paint code is either L700 or L741.

3) I haven't seen a 110 before. the other codes are the engine and tranny numbers. They are the same for other, similar 968s.

Here's my list of 968 paint codes:

Jeff, to help make it easy for everyone to see it in the future, could you please post this information in a thread by itself.
It would help us all search it in the future.
Regards.

1) Option code 428 - I'll bet it is 438 which is full power seat- left side.

2) There are multiple production paint codes for the same color. This is largely due to a change to water based paints. Black is one of them. Although the sales code is always A1 the production paint code is either L700 or L741.
Thanks, Jeff968,

That's a great list of paint codes. I checked and mine is L741. I bought a set of Guards Red side strip protectors and am considering getting them painted. Perhaps "black Porsche paint" is common black but having the correct number may help the shop. I thought about painting them myself but setup and teardown of the paint equipment may be more pain that I want right now.

You're right about the option code being 438, but there are power seats on *both* sides.

Again, thanks for the great paint code list.

Harvey,
No problem, let me know if you need anything else. If you have a power seat on the right you should have code 437 as well.

Jeff, are you talking about 4-way power (raising/lowering only) or 8-way power?

Harvey, I'm sure a paint shop can do those for you at a minimal charge. Just prep them and drop them off. Especially because you want black, it shouldn't be a huge hassle for them. And being simple narrow parts that will inevitably be stricken anyway, maybe you don't need a ultra-high-end paint shop, but just a decent one.

Arash,
The 8-ways get a code on the sticker (437/438), the 4-ways are standard and don't get a code.

Ah, thanks! So was a non-powered seat ever available, aside from like recaro racing seats or whatever?

Jeff,

Yes, I misread the number. I'ts actually option code 437, which is "Comfort Seat Left, Electrically Controlled."

Question Option code 718?

I didn't find option code 718 on the lists. The PO said it was for the 030 rear stabilizer bar. Can anyone confirm this? Where 'bouts would the bar have identifying numbers on it?

Question...why would anyone just order a single stabilizer bar of all the 030 parts available? Would the rear only bar give any reasonable advantage?

Ah, option code 718., one of my favorites subjects. Below is everything you'd want to know about 718:

I've been looking at the registry statistics and was wondering how the factory used option code 718. Option code 718 is listed as "model code designation" and was used when they would take a car originally made for one model year and reclassify it as the next model year. From what I can tell:

All the early 94 cars, produced from March 1993 through June 1993 (these are the 94s with the 944 style seats, engine compartment trim, cup1 17"wheels, ect) were all originally 93s and reVINed as 94s using option code 718.

All 94s produced between August 1993 and February 1994 (these have the 993 seats, no engine compartment trim, if equipped with 17" wheels, most had the new Cup2s, other changes) were truely MY 1994s and don't have option code 718.

The VINs series for the changeover from the early 94 to late 94 968 cabs was somewhere between RS840244 (which I have registered and has the 944 seats and a June 93 build date) and RS840251 (which I have regsitered and has the 993 seats).

All MY 1995 968 cabriolets produced from February 1994 through the end of production in June of 1994 were all originally 1994 models and reVINed as 95s using option code 718. (SS840061 - SS840366)

MY 1995 968 coupes produced from February 1994 through June of 1994 (SS820061 - SS820258) were all originally 1994 models and reVINed as 95s using option code 718.

There was a final batch of 1995 coupes produced during September 1994 through the end of production in October of 1994. The VINs look to cover SS820259 - SS820319. These coupes are truely MY 1995s and don't have the code 718.

An interesting and unusual feature of this final batch of coupes is the center console. Unlike every other North American 968 coupe or cab the console lid and cassette and coin holder were not standard. Only cars with option code 423 (listed on the vehicle information sticker) have the usual lid. Car's without code 423 have the european console tray.

Sooo, Jeff, you're saying that my MY 1994 is really a 1993-1/2"? Sounds about right as I just checked and the build date was "5/93" with Vin ending in RS820148. Porsche must have had trouble selling the 968 and sales lagged behind production in its last years?

In your notes above, you mention Vins with RS and SS. Does my RS820148 jive with your findings?

If it's like the 928's, there appears to have been a planned phase-out of 928 model, with parts from one year showing up on the next..and very little in the way of substantive change from MY92 and MY95. Incidentally, this coincides with the years of 968 production.

Wow! Great info is being posted on Rennlist. Thanks, Jeff, for helping me better understand my car. I'm afraid I have more to learn.

Harvey
