Default thingo 968 turbo project

Have had my 968 for about a year now, I decided that rather than modify my 951 radically I would start from a 968 base, but what started as a lttle project has got a bit bigger and will take quite a lot longer than I imagined.
Put the kw suspension in about nine months ago so I have been able to take it out to the track a fair bit and gotten to know the characteristics of the chassis, and yes the 968 is a fantastic handling car.

These things always seem to take longer than ever seems possible, first waiting for parts and it has been at the shop since before Xmas but finally the work has begun!
The turbo is just dummy mounted but you can get the idea of placement.
The intercooler will be in the front bumper, wastegate will be where the oil filter is normally positioned.

This was the first time I had seen a 968 sans front guards and I was quite surprised how different it is compared to the 944 chassis, I knew it felt different around corners, but now that I have seen the 'boxed' sections I can understand why.

basic spec is 16v 3.1 twin scroll gt35 motec ems

Nice!

Do you have any more detailed pics of the boxed section? I didn't know they had boxed it like that. Looks like it was welded on after the stamping was done?

Also, do you have more pics of the intercooler area? I'm sure arash would like to see those.

What spring rates are you running and how do you like the kw setup?

I'm interested in knowing what the tubing and black bottle are in the first photo at the right.

That is about the clearest pic for now, that top section is welded to the 'body' piece, the 944 only has the body piece. The whole front section shows a lot of attention to rigidity.

We haven't got anything to show of the intercooler yet, waiting for the core, but it will more or less go where the aluminium bumper is, wide with a top entry and bottom exit.

The kw's are custom, 100nm (~560lb)front 60nm(~335lb) rear(stock torsion bars), it tends to understeer na, but I am very happy with them, it is a street/track car.

I'm planning on building a frankenstein 968 turbo this summer! I have lots of parts and still haven't decided exactly which way to go, but so far it's looking like putting the 8v 2.7 head on the 968 block with stock internals (except 951 rods) and all 951 intake/exhaust. All the hard parts to this conversion will be figuring out what to do with 951 parts that don't quite fit in a 968, like the IC!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Time always seems a flexible concept with projects, but nevertheless my 968 turbo is moving along, the turbo manifold is mostly done, it still has to be honed and coated, but now the turbo is actually supported by the manifold.
Tight fit but you can get the idea.
Very happy with the dash, am using the blanked off hole opposite the high beam as the general warning light. For the indicators we are going to use the trailer indicator light in the fuel gauge, didn't even know about that till I was browsing the user manual one night.

Thanks for that guys,I'm trying to keep the interior clean and factoryish, but I wanted to use the shift display as it is very flexible(programable multicoloured),it is inside the cluster at least.Dash will be alcantara and I will just use the porsche buttons and positions on the centre console and adapt the cruise control controls to work the motec.
Don't think I get to turn the display on for a while yet.

Yes that is a bit of a challenge, it'll run under the manifold but will require a bit more fabrication to get it there.

Is anyone else concerned about having a plastic belt cover and the timing belt itself next to that amount of heat? I think I would take a good look at coating/wrapping the turbo and installing a heat shield there.
