Default 3.6 turbo engine removal pictures

Here are some pic's of the engine removal I did over the weekend as well as some pictures of my (clean) garage before I started.

My helpers include my 8 year old daughter (on the left) and her friend and they are removing the tranny cover underneath the car. My oldest daughter (13) and son (9) were not interested, but I have faith that at least one of my kids has the car gene!

What motivated me to do this? Well, I got an estimate from the Porsche dealer of $4,000 to repair several oil leaks and from there I decided to drop the engine, or more accurately, raise the car over it! I was waiting on the clutch to go out but as the leaks were getting worse, I figured I'd go for it.

Special thanks to Jerry (Boing 717) for his engine removal steps and pictures and these were incredibly helpful and accurate. I have the Enthusiasts companion but have not found that to be nearly as helpful as other "free" sources.

More pictures to follow.

I wish I had a garage like yours!!

I just had my leaks done (12 hours labour) and the indy straightened two slightly bent rear wheels for €1291. They didn't drop the engine though, they removed the turbo and a few other parts to do the fixes.

What a cool project! Helps to have all the gear which you have.
Good on you for doing this and not lining the stealers pockets further.

Default Engine disassembly- Latest Pictures

See the latest pictures and its been going slower than I would have liked (what a shock!) While I had the engine out, I did a leak down and most everything looked great. However, cylinder number 2 was not seating properly on the exhaust valve, so now I'm looking at pulling that head off and most likely, all of them while I'm "in there".

It was relatively minor as it 7% more than the others, but as I know about it, its hard for me to let it go.

Also, I need to find a good 964 turbo workshop manual as I am flying blind on the steps required for disassembly (fuel, hoses, intake). I can figure it out, but would prefer a tried and true approach as I'm not being very efficient.

Your tearing the engine apart based on a cold leakdown value of 7%? Put that head back on and step away from the engine, sir
When you get to that valve it's guide won't look any different than the others but if you insist on forging forward, have a machine shop do a port clean-up on your heads and port match the intake.
As for the factory manual, it won't be much help. Take lots of pictures of how things are hooked up.
Whatever you do, do not rely on the "964 Enthusiasts Companion" I tried to use it when I was fixing my manifold and discovered two major mistakes in it. You can't trust a word that's writte in in it or any of the pictures when it comes to Turbo information.
Good luck and keep us posted as to your progress.

Default with pictures this time

The other five cylinders were in the 20-25% and # 2 was at 30-35% (i checked twice) and when I sprayed the exhaust valve from underneath with a liquid, I could see the the air causing it to bubble around the valve. I'm thinking I may want to have a real Porsche mechanic come by and look at it before jumping in. The car has 60,000 miles on it and ran beautifully before I started, so I may actually put my head back on I was only taking it apart to fix the oil leaks.

Also, I agree with your assessment of the Enthusiasts companion as it's not provided much help thus far. Pictures it is!

Having the confidence to take out the motor yourself is a major hurdle you've accomplished. Everything else should be cake in comparison. Good luck, take and post pix!
