air leak causes lean mixture and lean mixture causes high exhaust temperatures. i would make sure first that there are no air leaks. and yes, if you have start or idle issues it could be due to air leak.
another recommendation is to remove that secondary air crap. you´ll get rid of useless heavy weight and higher exhaust temperatures due to fresh oxygen and post combustion in the exhaust.

Timing with a EZ is fixed and not adjustable so I think you can eliminate that.
If you don't have an Innovate LM-1 or LM-2, now is the time to buy one and possibly a Leask adjustable wur to get your mixture set. You will have to weld an O2 sensor bung into the tailpiece behind the muffler to effectively use one. A check of the various control pressures should be performed. You will need a gauge made for that and a Mityvac vacuum/pressure pump.
You might try disconnecting your air injection system (if you don't live in Cali maybe you should consider eliminating it, as Fritz recommends) and see if the headers stop glowing then.
