Fat mistake there.

I have an opportunity to get into a 930, but thinking about it and recent discussion on 965s in the 964 forum made me wonder if a 3.3 was in reach for a little more. However, if drivers are 120k, then I guess it’ll always be just a dream.
So will this be in lieu of the 93 C2? I personally love the C2's and my 93 is another I will not part with.

No, getting rid of the C2 hasn’t crossed my mind. The 930 would be an addition.

I guess I could use it to help fund a 965 though. But I’d rather have both.

I've never driven a 930 but there's a lot to like, IMO, like light weight.
There's some really well build hot rods out there too.
It could hit the sweet spot.

I've had 2 930's; a 1986 that had 20k one-owner miles and was modified with a larger turbo, cams, exhaust, intercooler, and some other smaller mods. I will say that that car was one of my favorite cars I have ever owned. The noise it made, the way it felt, everything on it was just about right. I sold that car around 6 years ago for a 996 GT2.

My other 930 was a stock 505 slant nose. That car was, IMHO, a pig. Maybe it needed a service or something but it was slower than slow and felt anemic. Maybe after my '86 930 I was expecting more but it was a letdown and I ultimately sold it for a 997TT.

In the end, my current 965 with an exhaust as the only mod feels very similar to my '86 930 in terms of power, noise, and fun. Yes, the transmission is worlds better but the 4 speed never bothered me much. I guess living in Florida where it's just highway cruising and no twisty roads is what it was made for. Before I bought my 965 I posted a WTB ad for a modded 930 or 965 and whichever came first I would buy. My car needed a lot of TLC and for the price it worked. I don't think you'll be disappointed either way.

IMO, Turbos with stock engines get boring quickly. Once you experience the responsiveness of a hot rodded 930 or 965, there's no going back.

I agree a modded 930 is a nice ride. Especially with a 5 speed swap. Nothing against it but if you buy a 930 for $60-80k and start modding it and doing all the past due maintenance you can easily get into 965 money and be shy some of the upgrades a 965 offers on of which is the G50.

I am always torn on if I should bring my car back to stock or leave it as is. I don't drive it as much as I did but I have no doubt it will feel anemic compared to the upgrades I have done.

All good

Stay safe and Happy Holidays everyone.

In the past 12 months I quietly and privately sold my 930, 997GT2RS, 997GT2, 996GT2 and I am still going to sell another 996GT2 and a 997GT3RS.
Guess what I will NOT be selling: 964 Turbo. For me, case closed!!!
(Like a couple of you I also decided to retire at the end of this year and it is time to build/buy cars that are louder, smellier, and less sophisticated and I want to drink a different flavor Kool-aid)

Ballsy to sell all those cars (& all within a 12 month period),.. not from a market perspective, but from a emotional attachment perspective. I would definitely have a tough time letting go of so many awesome cars.

But then again, with so many in a similar attachment category, I can see where you might want to slim down a bit & try a different avenue.

Kudos also for selling quietly & privately. I would prefer to do the same. Watching EMan go thru the public paces a year ago was hard to watch. But that guy ("2008 whiteGT3" guy) was a total d$%^ (he then changed his RL name to "ugotgrossed" & thought he could fool everyone too). Totally makes anyone not want to go through all that crap.

Anyway,... well done. Now I know who to go to (privately) if/when I need a "market-check" on how to price my cars

Funny you mention weight, Paul. Very true. Back in September on a 4 day roadtrip with my buddies (‘79 930 and ‘90 C2) we were up in Idaho about to go over a pass and noticed a scale on the side of the road. It was on but nobody there. So we turned around and we all weighed our cars. We took our roadtrip gear out, each car had about 3/4 tank of gas.

My buddy’s 930 is pretty stripped out and the C2 has gone on a diet too. The weight difference was laughable!!

my car was 3220.

the 79 930....

2680

500 pounds!!!!

his car has headers, exhaust, Kokeln IC, same k27 turbo as us - interestingly he barely pulls on me. I run a 1 bar spring and no cat. I chalk it up to the gearing. ??

I'm sure it's the gearing difference.

An interesting thread indeed. Always a day late and a dollar short.

bmwtmx, have you made any decisions? or moved in a new direction? ... since you started this thread back in Oct 2020?

... I'm sure some of you, like me, have been watching the 991 GT market as of late. Especially the 991.2 GT3 Tourings, wow. Some of them are still going for $40- $50k over MSRP. And they are dragging the winged versions of those 4.0l cars right along with them. There seems to be a lot of spare cash out in the markets these days, and people are gobbling up the GT cars (plenty more in the 991 generations too,... so we're even seeing the 997 GT market head upwards now too). Doug Tabbutt of Switchcars (who primarily focuses & deals in 997 GT cars) is even starting to list his inventory at higher #'s than last year. At this point, I could probably get $15k more than I paid for my 997.2 GT3 that I bought 2.5 yrs ago (granted it is in a rare color & spec). But still....

anyway, with the limited selections & availability of 964 Turbo's out there,.. and increasing prices,... it seems like a good time to sell. And possibly a justification could be made to sell one valuable/collectable car & buy another,... given the gains that can be made on the sell.

update?

If someone made me an offer that is acceptable I would sell but there are no cars on the market at all. I have a few interested parties trying to buy it for cheap but I have no interest. I doubt I could ever replace it so if the numbers don't reflect that this car will be with me for a long time which is not a bad thing at all!

Ahhh, interesting feedback. Thank you for adding that update.

Rennlist is a funny place. Most enthusiasts on here, that have wallets deep enough to pull the trigger on a over-$100k purchase, for a car that just "pops" up for sale,... are indeed looking to steal it. So of course their perception of the market is from closer to a year ago. (or they are just pressuring the numbers lower). It is just simply a poor place to sell.

I am willing to bet that if you put it up on Cargurus (which I think is only somewhere around $35 to list), or Autotrader, you would be surprised at the interest. Of course that is a double edged sword, cuz you will get a tidalwave of tire-kickers & low ballers,... but that comes with the territory when searching for that ONE buyer who is serious & willing to part with $120k or more.

In your case, it sounds like enduring that "hassle" is not worth inquiry just to take a temperature reading on the market, to see what your car is worth. I get it. I would not want to do that either.

If I was serious about selling my car, I would do a direct approach to a number of high end exotic car sales businesses, who would prefer & enjoy a private purchase (because it means that the car would not have been "out there" on the market for comparison),... and who could put a somewhat unrealistically high price on it for sale,.. and would be Ok with minimal margins on the flip. Hence they might be willing to buy it for $6k less than what they would turn-around & price it at.
