Threebond 1194 between heads & cam towers
Hello,
What is the correct application technique of Threebond 1194 between the heads and the cam towers on a 964 engine.
In the 964 engine rebuild DVD Loctite 574 is used and the dude only applies it around the holes:
I am following a different sealant guide (the Supertec one) and will use Threebond 1194. I have read to apply a thin layer just with a latex glove. Or use a print roller. Anybody else gone through this and did they apply it to the entire flat contact surface? What technique did you use?

I usee a roller. I don't like the idea of just having it around the holes. Seems that it would torque slightly unevenly and if a gap arose, you'll have a leak. Using a roller was easy and gave a good thin uniform layer.

Thanks Nick, roller on its way and will get this job this weekend and document as best I can. See my C4 engine build thread.

This is what the previous engine builder used on my cam tower. It's Loctite 574. As with the case, these are precision fits that don't need a lot of sealant.
Currently I'm undecided which sealant I will use. I have them all.

I follow this sealant guide cause I figure this guy knows what he is talking about

One of the magic things in life is that experience can help you grow.We have learned since the privious post that the best way to seal an engine case is with a series of glue in speciafic locations. We no longer use 574 to seal case halves.
Case sealing suggestions :
Outer case halves perimeter : Threebond 1194
Bearing web surfaces: Loctite 574
#8 Bearing O-Ring: Threebond 1211
Case Thru Bolts: Dow Corning 55 on Green Viton O-Rings
Flywheel Seal: dry
Front pulley Seal: dry
Intermediate Shaft Cover to Case: o-ring Dow 55, gasket style 574
Oil Breather Cover to Case: Loctite 574
Cylinders to Case: Curil T
Cam Towers to Cylinder Heads: Threebond 1104
Cam Chain Housings to Case: gaskets Loctite 574
Cam Chain Housings to Cam Towers: gasket Loctite 574
Cam Chain Housing Cover to Cam Chain Housing: Gasket Loctite574
Gaskets: Thin coat of Loctite 574

Here is a Rennlist thread on this topic. Steve Weiner sticks with Loctite 574 but applied properly (more is not better). I will use the same application pattern as shown in this thread and use a roller with Threebond (1104 Neo, 1194, 1184, Yamabond)
All of my applications of 574 have been done with a sponge roller. I am using a traditional print rubber roller for the 1194 stuff.

sealant
the thing with 574 that's nice is the squeeze out like around the valve springs that is present in the previous picture is solid and has a tenacious grip when it dries and is less likely to come loose . with a rubber type sealant its more likely that over time it can break loose. remember it is possible in certain conditions for oil to bypass the filter. your call. 574 my vote.
