Default Sealant between cam housing and cylinder heads

Hi everyone, I'm curious about what sealant type and brands folks are using between the cam housing and cylinder heads. I know Porsche recommends Dow Corning 730 but it seems to be $$$ and I haven't been able to find it here in PHX. Porsche also recommends Dow Corning 111 for the O-rings. I was going to use motor oil to coat the O-rings.

I found a broken cylinder stud on a valve adjustment job. I'm so bummed. It's a 1977 Carrera 3.0L

Thanks everyone

Welcome to the board.

I used Threebond 1104/Yama-bond on mine and has been great. 3 years since the rebuild. I used the Dow Corning 111 and works very well, it gets used frequently since. Check this thread out over on Pelican parts http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-e...pproaches.html Also get the Porsche Rebuild Book by Wayne Dempsey. Great information!

Make sure to replace the lower(exhaust side studs) with steel while you have it apart. The tops are already steel.

Get in touch with Don@ebsracing.com. If they don't have it they can get it. EBS Racing is a Porsche only parts and machine work source. Prices and service is great.
I used the 574 on some parts of my rebuild but the Three-bond 1104, available as Yama-bond from Yamaha dealers, has been great. Had to separate one head from the cam tower. The coverage was great, a shot of the Yama-Bond applied.

I used 574 there as well.

One of these days I need to re-seal one of my cam towers to the head. I used 574 there, and have a small leak.

Everyone in this business has favorites that is based on personal experience and overall success.

I'm a fan of Loctite #574, however its not forgiving of the folks who don't take the time to learn how to use it correctly. Its a product that falls under the heading: "If a little is good, more is NOT better",....

Default cam tower sealant/s

This Porsche guy say Loctite 574 does well by me. Stays flexible yet firm for longer than most of us. Kidding aside I find more concearn with the rocker shaft bores, the rocker shaft fastners / torque and moreover correct center when installing. Service manual can be helpful however understanding that tightening causes the ends of the rocker shaft to expand so as hold inplace, is also the key to creating the perfect oil seal. Ofcourse it must reside in a unmolested cam housing /bore. No beating the s it out. when dissasembling!!! That said never overlook the spray bar . Smart people clean with a .22 caliber barrel brush, then blow w compressed air checking all 11? squirters. God speed MJ
