What are you using to heat the bolt head and soften the loctite?

Sorry to "brake" into the caliper discussion, but this just in -

Even though Rob and I are away from the car for a few days, the awesomer keeps coming. Behold the Cargraphic final pipe that replaces the secondary muffler. The lobster rocket is getting its Cat and primary muffler back. This will end the exhaust, retaining the length of the factory exhaust. Rob can elaborate on what we hope to achieve. So can my wife who will enjoy a much less smelly car.

Rob's current g-pipe will go on my new Targa improving it for me this spring and its next owner after that. Well, I hope I'll drive it this spring and not sell it before. 😉

The cat bypass and cup pipe that was on the LR are back with the car's previous owner Porschenut_Lee. Did a swap for some other parts. It's great being in this community.

Propane is not hot enough to heat the bolts to over 450F all the way down the entire length of the threads.

thats what I figured - what would you suggest - I don't really need a big setup - cuz I'll only need it every often for something small like this...

Try mapp gas in the yellow bottles. It burns hotter than propane.

A little canister of MAPP gas works fine.

yeah was just reading up on mapp, propane etc - I'll have to bite the bullet and buy one when I get back. I really don't like using flames, not that there is anything wrong w flames - but I just don't do flame or electricity. Guess thats going to have to change.

It really, really, really helps when you are trying to undo a corroded fastener. You will fear nothing! Even the Vermont barn find that has been sitting exposed for the last 20 winters.

I'm assuming you just heat the bolt or nut till its red hot - and then let it cool enough to turn black again and crack it loose....anything else I need to know?

with the caliper bolts - aluminum expands at 5 times the rate of steel - so I'm assuming this is what makes it so easy - aside from loosening the old lock tight in the hole....since the aluminum would grow more than the steel, making the join looser btw the two...

I "think" in this specific case the heat is releasing the loctite.

With all the talk of caliper rebuilding, for our four pots, do we need 2x40mm and 2x36mm pistons? or do we need 2x44mm? Have a '90 if that matters.

40/36 for the front four pot calipers -

the best/cheapest i have found is this:

http://www.racingbrake.com/Boots-and...p/bp-404bs.htm

you need two sets.

do you have the four pot or two pot rears?
