It sounds like the value of these seats is going down! I'm still interested if you decide to sell them Colin or a swap to some good condition Cashmere Ruffled Comfort seats plus some $$!

Yes, I see that in the option code list and right below it, option 982 'Soft leather look or draped leather seat covers' .. don't know what the difference would be there either. I've seen the term 'Supple Leather' on U.S. spec window stickers so maybe it's the translation to english from the original german? It's a mystery ... thanks for the info

Good grief, please save me! Sorry to spoil your fun lads but I'm pulling this thread back to the more meaningful stuff like the oily bits and far, far away from the benefits (or lack) of ruffled leather on the seats. We good with that?

Today Marc came into the shop and decided on a mission to build a 6 speed C2 gearbox, so once all the parts were recovered from storage he managed to put together a full set of casings and G50/21 gears to build at least one complete 'box which is now going together. The first job was to pull all the matching bearings out of their respective cases and fit them to the replacement differential case. Marc clearly enjoys building gearboxes:

Colin,

Are you suggesting you can convert a 5-sp G-50 into a 6-sp ? ... or did they put too much MSG on my takeaway last night?

Technically, no, you can't.

Some while ago we were fortunate to buy a couple of complete 993 G50/20 & G50/21 gearboxes which both had damaged bell housings, one from an exploding differential and one as a result of accident damage. The problem is that 993 bell housing castings are no longer available from Porsche. The good news is that in the back of the stores we also had a 964 G50/03 that had been run without oil, destroying all the bearings and the final drive which was obviously uneconomical to repair. What we decided to do here is to rebuild the G50/21 using the G50/03 bell housing.

So don't worry, but do avoid the MSG in any case because that's definitely not good for you. Try beer instead, that usually has a less lasting effect.

Colin, thanks again for the photo's and hope you don't mind if I ask a favour

When you or your ace 9m-minions fit the gearbox could you have an eyeball to estimate how far if possible the gearbox/starter motor can be moved forward before it runs out of clearance with the bodyshell.

Yes, no problem. What is it that you are hoping for, the space to fit a longer starter motor?

Ahhh ....

I appreciate the explanation, that makes sense (I think?!).

I'm looking forward to reading about the development of this car, thanks in advance for documenting and explaining.

Good health!

Just to clarify, Colin ... the 964 bell housing is a direct bolt on to the 993 gearbox case and the 993 engine case?

Thanks I'm hoping I can push my engine forward more than just the 28mm I shorten the gearbox bell housing by.

I want to move my engine forward as far as the gearbox will allow within the space of the bodyshell, don't mind adding local bumps to create more clearance.

Yes, the 1990-93 964 bell housing casting is interchangeable with the 993 bell housing - other than the cooling pipework locations that are incorporated in the 993 part only. When fitting a 6 speed into a 964 that provision is not required so you can use the 964 part.
