!!!! HELP Motor Mount Bolt Snapped !!!!
Replacing motor mounts this morning. Everything going well, but slow to make sure I do it right. Cleaned all the bolts and nuts etc. top four looked good. WRONG!!!! The third 13mm one I was applying torque to snapped. Now I want to replace all four with new.
Two questions for my friends at RL.
1) Best way to extract bolt from passenger side mount.
2) size and thread of those bolts?

- Try to grip the remainder of the bolt with a vice grip.
- Cut a slot in the remainder of the bolt and use a screw driver or chissel to turn the bolt out
- Drill a hole in the middle of the bolt and use an easyout.
Did you use a torque wrench when you were tightening this bolt? If not, make sure you use one as the torque is pretty low on these bolts.

I just went out in the garage to look at my mount and have another possible option. You might be able to grab the bolt from underneath the frame with a vice grip.. I can feel one or two threads exposed when I feel under the mount area. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I'd support the engine and take the mount back off. Then do one (or more) of the following in order of PITA factor:
[*]Try to grip the remainder of the bolt with a vice grip.[*]Cut a slot in the remainder of the bolt and use a screw driver or chissel to turn the bolt out[*]Drill a hole in the middle of the bolt and use an easyout.
Not sure on the size or thread but you could take the other bolt with you when you go the HW store or the dealer.

May have to locate my extractors. Not a lot of room but at least it is easiest one to get to. Could be the LHS.
Thanks for the input. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Do you have the parts catalog PDF? That lists the size of the bolts in the description for the part.

Found the bolts at hardware store. My bit broke so had to get new extended bit to reach bolt so I can extract.
There were almost enough threads to turn it out. I could get my needle nose vise grip on it, but not enough to turn it.
Was a quick project this morning. Now two trips to stores and I am almost where I should have been before lunch. It's almost comical, but not.
I did download the parts PDF, but I forgot to look there. Guess I continue to learn as I can,
Thanks for all the help.

1/8" extended drill bit and a bolt extractor on end of a bit extension got it out. I am trying to double check torque.
P-car on DIY has the top bolts at 40 Nm (29 ft-lb) for the tops and Thomas advises 23 Nm above and that is big difference. I really don't ever want to do this again. Motor mounts, sure but not extract bolts from them.
I searched Rennlinst but found different numbers posted here to.

Good on Ya Ray for getting it out! I did exactly the same thing when I changed my motor mounts. It was one of the first DIY projects I ever performed on my car and I was seriously freaked out when I snapped the bolt. Just like you I used a drill and bolt extractor and added a good shot of WD-40 down the hole. It took me about 40 minutes to get it out.
I torqued by feel the second time around!

I have often used this table when I can not locate specific torques in the Factory Manual or Bentley's technical spec's book.
