Just wanted to check i was told that more modern synthetic engine oils tend to create more engine leaks ? Is this true ? If so what suggestions do you have.

Just had a service and went from Castrol 20/50 to Brad Penn 15/40......
Leaks have gone from a few spots to runs from both sides of the chain housing area in 2 weeks.......

That can probably be attributed to lower weight as much as anything else...any reason you didn't go with 20w50?

Leaks didnt seem to change since I have virtually no leaks unless it sits from more than a week or two, then I get a little spot on the pass side.

I use Mobil 1 5W40 TDT (Turbo Diesel Truck) oil, which is the same at Delvac 1 and Rotella T6. It has more Zinc than the standard M-1 oils. I don't have anything I would call a leak, but some seepage that will deposit a drop on my garage floor every week or so.

The diesel oils are actually also fine for gasoline engines too, just not the new ones that need special low ash oil for emissions reasons. The M1 TDT, Delvac-1 and Rotella T6 have API certifications SM/SL/SJ which were the gasoline certs up through the early 2000's, when these cars were made. They are not for newer low emissions cars. I use it because of the higher zinc levels which is recommended for these cars. The T6 is the only full synthetic Rotella oil while Delvac 1 and M1 TDT are also full synthetic. I use the M1 because it is widely available and WalMart sells it in 1 gallon jugs. It is also more expensive that the M1 for gasoline engines by about 25% but worth the difference since they have cut the zinc levels down in those formulas now and I have heard they should not be used in cars with the roller style cam followers.

After purchase of my 964 3 years ago, I had engine oil leaks. I changed the oil, Castrol GTX and the leaks slowed. I went about fixing leaks and ended with one small leak of 3 drops after parking over night. I then put in Brad Penn oil and my engine started leaking bad, real bad, to the point that I ended up rebuilding the engine. If you read enough you will find that there are different types of oil that will do this on an older or high mileage engine.
