Default So what engine oil are you now using?

After reading this thread on the 993 forum my head is spinning:

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/407224-anything-new-on-the-mobil-1-front.html

I've used Mobil One 15-50 since purchasing my car two years ago but reports of possible valve guide damage due to lower zinc levels concern me.

Are the folks here switching to Elf Excellium or Brad Penn?

Jim

Amsoil - ran it in the 80s but changed to Mobil 1 when it got hard to find. Changed back to it when Mobil 1 was reformulated into crap a couple years ago. Now that I get commercial pricing on it, I don't think I ever move away from Amsoil again.

Anybody ever hear of Chemlube?

It was put in my car by the PO when the engine was rebuilt. I'll have to decide soon what to use.

Default Elf Synthetic

I use this for now. When warmer weather reappears, I'll probably have to switch to something more viscous since I live in a HOT climate. This was recommended by the shop that has done service on my car although I am learning they sometimes have strange ideas on certain things (see my post on LWF/RS clutch). I'd be curious to hear whether anyone thinks this is not the correct oil to use.

I'll agree in full with Larry Herman; with the caveat that even Amsoil proactively goes on record to having done some reformulation of some of their 30/40 weight single and multi-grades; although I can't recall which ones - only that they very specifically told me that the grade that I use (5W-40) is unaffected and gladly report the formulation detail comprehensively (w/ ZDDP stats). They were VERY familiar with the nature of my Porsche specific inquiry and had forthright factual answers. My personal experience is that if you really do the review of the contents and test results and perhaps stay clear of the recently reformulated grades (that still have sufficient levels of zinc and phosphorus; specific to air cooled Porsche engines) you'll being buying all the insurance, peace of mind and longevity you seek. Larry also references price point benefits which I can also attest to being an advantage of Amsoil - provided you register with Amsoil as a premier customer and pay the very small annual fee. What that affords me is the ability to call the local jobber, tell him what I need, viola - Amsoil is on my front porch the next day with an invoice. No BS, no delay, and no affiliations w/ Amsoil. Seems a great product to me. No disrespect to anyone, but I will steer well clear of even the finest Dino oils. The advantages of Synthetics, provided the right ZDDP content, are self evident.

I use Brad Penn as long as I have owned the car. I noticed no differences in performance or feel. The car seems like it might get up to temp a little faster but that could just be placebo syndrome. Everything else is about the same. I noticed more difference changing my tranny fluid.

As of my recent engine rebuild, I'm now using Swepco 306 at the recommendation of my mechanic that built the engine. He said that it has the right amount of the anti wear additives (zinc, etc) that the big production oils have reduced. Before my engine rebuild, I was using Mobil 1, but no more.

I am seeing a slight trend of folks moving away from Mobile 1... why?
