Default Water in footwell's

Hi all

I know this is a common post but i've tried what feels like everything. I keep getting a significant puddle in my rear driver’s side footwell (RHD), the front footwell gets damp also. I've have the sunroof drains unblocked and replaced as well as the rear window rubbers. Could it be the a/c drains? Strange thing is that water is coming from underneath rather than on top of the carpet mats and is much worse after the car has been parked up in the rain.

Many thanks in advance for suggestions and apologies for not being a more active member recently (blaming fatherhood)!

Cheers,
James

Yes, it can be the AC drains. The drains are easy to clean/check. See thread below.

Lol saw the subject and just knew you were in the uk.

Mine leaked into the front and rear pas side footwells. As well as the front trunk.

Heres what i've done so far.

Pulled all the wet foam out and dried
Cleaned the roof drains, you want them to gush nicely just a dribble means they're still blocked.
Cleaned the muddy gunk out of the windscreen seal, dried and ran a bead of silicon between glass and rubber.
Cleaned the bonnet seal and the channel it sits in, glued it in, and globbed vaseline all round.
Oh and cleaned the hvac drain

Mines pretty dry now. Depending the angle of your driveway water gets into the footwells from all sorts of places. I also have a few Air Dry bags sat in the car most of the time just to keep it nice and dry.

Thanks Rob, it was your thread that got me thinking along these lines. But your dampness was on the carpet mats rather than beneath like mine?

James

Thanks Alex, yes Ive a few swollen air dry bags in mine! Good tip re silicon sealing the screen, got to be worth a try. Boot area seems fine however.

Are the front sunroof drains drainig to the outside or the inside of the car? On my 993, the prior owner had a door check strap repaired, and the shop had the front roof drain tubes set up to drain into the car. Easy to check, take a straw and a mouthful of water and blow it into the front roof drains. If it drains outside, the drains are set up properly.

Hi

Check that the bonnet is sealing. Water in the front trunk will get into the footwells via the ribbing at the back of the trunk. You can put down a light dusting of talcum powder where suspicious and see if water tracks across it.

Thanks all.

Front sunroof drains are fine and rear window seals replaced. Trunk also seems bone dry. Sounds like next investigations are the windscreen (which appears ok at first check) and ac drains.

Thanks again and will keep you posted of devlopments.

I'll echo the thoughts about the boot seal being a potential problem. If it's not sealing ay the scuttle end, water gets into that area then drips inside the car. To test, spray water over the scuttle/bonnet join for a few minutes. Dry off the outside and then lift the bonnet. If you have water pooling on the plastic cover near the scuttle, you've got a leak there.

If you have, getting it to seal is not just a case of buying a new seal. You might have to do some bonnet adjustments to get the seal and bonnet to make a good contact. I had to do this and it's mostly stopped the leak. I now just get a few drops in the heaviest of rain (but still hoping to get it fully leak tight one day!).

Thanks Steve. The more I think about it the more I reckon it couple be a combination of issues. As mentioned the sunroof drains were blocked and side window needed resealing too yet the damp continues. Going back to the indie tomorrow where they'll dry it out and invtigate further. All these pointers are great as it will save labour in investigation.

Cheers,
James

My leak was the bonnet, not tight enough on the seal, and the screen.
Throw that foam away under the carpet, no point having a sponge in the car.

Sorted now thou, built a garage!

Russ, how did you make it tighter on the seal?

I had this when I first bought my 964. For me, it was the waterproof membrane behind the interior panels on the driver side door. It had been cut to ribbons by previous owner / mechanics.

New membrane and the problem went away.

don't forget to check all the fresh air servos too; that's where my water came from
