I had a pro tell me that the early 964 motors came with head gaskets and that Porsche stopped using head gaskets on the latter 964 motors and that if my 1989 964 had a motor without head gaskets , I must have an updated motor or a motor out of a later car . I told him he had the story backwards and he told me I was wrong .

As with doctors, I emplore you to get a second opinion. The BS meter is going off for me on this one...
And as a side, I really am pulling for you. I just would hate to see you spend a significant amount of money if it is not truly warranted.
My advice would be to go to another shop (Kelly Moss, etc.) and ONLY tell them that the car is not running. Let them figure out what is going on by themselves, and set a budget cap on "exploration". That is what I would do without a second thought...
Good luck!

Everyone keeps saying kelly moss I know they are pretty sharp but I do know auto associates in canton build all or most all of their aircooled engines.

Ben and I are going together really friendly..... They called back. Can see parts of the exhaust port in the exhaust system... Same in 1 & 2..... They refuse to try to go further and grenade the engine

that is a potential problem with a damaged engine trying to start it. Interesting, part of the exhuast port in the exhuast system? Can't imagine what caused that, but sounds catastrophic.

Wow I just dont see how that would happen from just sitting? or did I misunderstand did it die at some point? then not restart? Anyhow not the end of the world BTDT it can be fixed let me know how I can help if you decide to do it yourself .

Hawk,
in my former life I rebuilt aircraft engines. in my new life I have rebuilt about 10 porsche engines. With my experience I am not buying this diagnosis. first the leak down indicates that engine is cold and will not show accurate readings because of the lack of oil on the rings which acts as a lubricant and seal at the same time.
I would suggest let them figure out why it would not start first. if you truly have to rebuild the engine then you may want to do this your self or if you like I could help you. We could work something out. I do have space here for the engine including an engine stand . I have a bunch of connections in the part business and you could learn about the engine as well. A top end is fairly straight forward the worst part is timing the cams which just takes careful thought and checking to set. other that pretty straight forward. I dont see why you would spend more then $2k in the whole process. the other thing I would suggest is supertec head studs not ARP but that is a personal prefference.

They did not pull the exchangers. that would be the next visual confirmation. They used a bore scope to look, and really spent time looking at the valves. I'm going to bring it home, and plan my next move. I can't afford the 7k they want, and that doesn't include my new clutch (while I'm in there).
I think step one is to confirm myself also the condition of the motor with whatever visuals I can. He did say the exhaust valve in #2 was very loose in the guide
