Default crying here... not a good phone call

well, I called to get an update on the car. The car has not run since Fall 2011, so the engine was dead cold. the shop does a huge amount of Porsche work, so I trust their analysis and diagnostics.

Leakdown, in order---1,2,3,4,5

13%, 72%, 5%, 10%, 11% 6 was not done since it's hard to get to, and the other numbers were significant enough to stop there.

He also said compression on #2 was 55 lower than the others.

My wallet feels a top end coming.... what do you think? BTW- my sphincter just closed tighter than a bank vault as I prepared for the worst

Sorry Hawk!

To the experts: The engine has been sitting a while...would driving it a bit help seal things up again?

rwut row.

Yeah, at least a top. Need to get it out and a part to know for sure what's going on with it.

What happened before it stopped running?

that's the funny thing. To me, the engine felt good. that day we had been running all over backroads. I didn't overrev it, nor did it backfire during any drives. My son drove it home, but the only symptom was it just wouldn't start. Would kind of run on starting fluid sprayed into the air intake, but once that was gone the car died.

I know that feeling. Always painful, but part of the cost of ownership of a 20 year old 911. Take care of her!

Mine had the same- and then top end build with a "replace everything that's got to be replaced" while you're in there...and it runs like a brand new car now. Very happy. Not cheep - but still I have spent less on my "perfect" 964 than I did on my 2005 Audi A4...so no complaints from me...

well, I have to wait for them to do whatever other diagnostics they are going to do. Still hoping, but the future smells expensive

nor is mine....it hurt alot...

I am sorry to hear - don't mean to minimize your pain...

I can say that Steve W did a fantastic job on the heads, and that part wasnt too expensive. the biggest expense by far was the shop that was pulling the engine, and re-assembling, since i couldnt do any of that myself (I dont have a garage)...

My comments are only that, if the work is inevitable, then the light at the end of the tunnel is, effectively, a better car when you are done.

Did they say where it was leaking when the did the leakdown on it? A lot of times you have a pretty good idea what's going just by where it's leaking out... or in.

I'm about 2 manhours from finishing my rebuild. It all started innocently enough with an engine that had just turned 100,000 miles at Watkins Glen. One thing led to another, and we did a leakdown and found numbers in the 40% range across the board. (How could it have been so strong on the track and exhibit those values?)

Anyway, since I have my own lift and great Porsche Club members willing to pitch in, I just dove in and tore it down to the connecting rods and whent from there. We replaced all of the rings (my cause of the bad numbers), put in all new intake valves and had the heads done by a shop. My total outlay was under $1700. It SOUNDS strong, but I will reserve further comment until I have it wrong out!

Good luck with yours!

My opinion would be to get the car running first. Take it for a spirited drive. Then do a leak test.

I had a similar experience on my SC several years ago. Drove the car and then tested the cylinders that were reported low. Both were in spec.

Why did they do a leak test?
