Default update.... good news

ok- I knew I had to add power steering fluid and I did. The tank was pretty empty and took more after running the motor for a while. So I put 1 can of Lucas power steering leak stop in it. I might add a second, rather than just PS fluid, but the howling is gone now. I'm still low, so either will be ok. I have not taken it for a ride.

I still have what sounds like some loose ball bearings in a tin can. i'm going to pull the belt and see if that stops.

I've had cars which could take happily take either pas fluid or atf, is there anything special about the system used here that requires atf and renders pas fluid unacceptable?

Porsche says use atf , atf is cheap and it works , why bother changing to anything else ?

I don't have it in front of me, but I believe Adrian's book says synthetic P/S fluid will eat the seals, and quick.
Not sure what the regular stuff would do.

Hawk, I've googled the Lucas Stop Leak stuff you've used and it looks a little more viscous than regular atf/psf, so I wouldn't top it off with more Stop Leak. I really don't think I'd bother flushing it, just top off with ATF.

Just checked; Adrian's book says "synthetic atf" will eat the seals - but this is probably the same issue as there once was with synthetic engine oil, long since solved. Porsche now allow Pentosin power steering fluid (synthetic) as per this tech bulletin http://www.pcarworkshop.com/images/f...996_640696.pdf

In the uk alot of products are packaged as "Automatic transmission and Power steering fluid", and the stuff sold as dedicated power steering fluid often says "meets Dexron 2,3,4 etc" on the back. My owners manual just specifies "ATF Dexron" which says to me they aren't that bothered. If they had something specific in mind they'd have specified which version of Dexron - unless they specificaly required the sperm whale oil friction modifier that was present before Dexron II came out in 1972 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEXRON

It was I! I've had Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak and PS fluid in there for over 5 years (I went back and checked when I did it).

As I stated, I had a leak at the rack that blew out the front boot, and as a temp fix (so I could run a DE at the Glen) I drained the fluid, replaced both boots and the fluid with both products and went on tracking. I've put on over 20,000 miles since then and no problems.

However, YOU should use what the factory recommends.

That's all fine and good in practice but it will never work in theory .
