I recently had the same clicking sound on my '92 964 turbo. It was suspected that it was an exhaust leak. There did turn out to be a leak and it was fixed. I also had an end of season leak down test performed and it was found that three of the cylinders were lacking compression by 40, 14, and 13 % respectively. On further investigation it turned out to be bent valves. A rebuild was needed and performed and I am now breaking the engine back in. At the time I was similarly not sure about what direction to take but now I am pleased with the result of the rebuild. In the end the sound was the exhaust leak but I would reccomend performing a leak down test to be sure. I too had invested a lot into my 964 and I agree With aforementioned thought about the comparable expense versus a new car. You have a great 911 and it is worth it.

Sorry to hear of your engine woes, agree with the others don't sell your car, it's a belter. You find another as good!

Listening to the video it really sounds like an exhaust leak.

Try momentarily plugging the exhaust outlet while it is running. This will build backpressure in the exhaust, and if it leaking you will hear it. It only takes a moment to test it.

Hope its something simple.

Best of luck to you.

Hi

Sounds like exhaust to me as well. Have you had a look to see if all the nuts are there? The studs do break off.

Best of luck

Carried on my research on options should the worst be confirmed.

Some pretty amazing stuff to upgrade while you're in there - should I rebuild.

The general sensuous seems to be to:

* Motec.
* RS Valves and guides.
* Non Porsche rod bearings.
* ARP Bolts.
* RS Cams or the like.
* Racing/ 993 valve springs & Titanium retainers.
* 9M or Corillo rods - but seem unnecessary.
* Plastic or Varioram intake manifold.
* Supertec/ Dialever/ 993 head studs.
* 9M or Mahle pistons and cylinders.

Apparently this can result in 350 HP at the crank.

Or perhaps and engine swap 993 TT?

Quick question the 250 HP quoted for our cars stock is at the crank or wheels?

Just a valve I hope!
Shaun thanks for the detailed test!

Yeah I'm aware of the final silencer often cracking when running a cup pipe - happened to Vic and Gary of London 964 group!

In my case I have a Cat By and G-Pipe. Sadly it's not the exhaust, I checked at the time. Thanks though.

Good luck mate
Cheers mate - fingers crossed.

PS. I'm trying to convince Em that my car would be a great wedding car also (using your pic as bate) she's not so sure about the buckets + her dress.

To be fair we'll see if I still have the car by then...

I'm sending out positive mindwaves in the direction of Chertsey, hopefully GTone have got you near the front of the queue for the diagnosis, so you won't have too much longer in limbo.

Ha. Seriously, me too!

Randomly reminds me of Donald Sutherland in 'Kelly's Heroes' "Stop giving me them negative waves man!" Gosh that's an awesome film!

Hopefully, I'm just thinking that if it's rebuild time and I do upgrades whether GTOne is up to the task... I've yet to find a customer who hasn't had a standard rebuild with GTOne...

"Hey Man, I'm drinking wine, eating cheese and catching some rays"

One of my all time favourite film lines

Thinking of your options Frank, and looking on teh positive side, if you chos eto upgrade as part of whatever work is needed 9hopefully not a lot)

Have you seen Spencers thread about his turbo engine build on PP? incredible stuff. But the main reason I mention it is for the alternative to Motec that is less expensive and has a dealer close to us. Might be worth a chat with Spencer if you decide to go that sort of route??

Hoping for good news from GTOne

Wow what a thread - I'll read through over next days. Am I right in understanding the car's not on the road yet?

Has anyone else put the MBE on their Porsche? At risk of showing my lack of knowledge I thought our cars already had Electronic Fuel Injection?

Is Spencer on Rennlist? I'm not a Pelican Parts member

Frank, he posts here under Spenny_b

He's on 911uk as well, thats where I initially saw the link to the engine build

I read the whole thread this morning, fascinating, but way over my head in a lot of areas! I'm sure Alex could understand and explain it though

Porsche964FP: If both kidneys have to go, I'm sure a "rear seats deletion" would accommodate one of those new hi-tech dialysis machines. Do, however, check the electrical schematic before purchase to see if it can operate sufficiently on 13.4 volts; and determine if circuitry is adaptable to DME so that automatic operation is possible; it will obviate dragging your medical technician around with you on track days. Those people, as a rule, are very fearful of high speeds. CHEERS
