Introducing 'Sabine' my '91 C4 Cab
Hi Folks,
15 or 16 months ago, I found Sabine on Craigslist, she was only 20 miles away. She was in beautiful condition with just 34k miles, however she did leak/weep in a few spots. Totally stock, except for wheels, stereo and R134A A/C conversion.
I always wanted a guards red cab with tan or cashmere interior. always. I think it's the ultimate toy. I picked a 964 due to classic looks, but updated (with the beta version of) ABS, AWD, airbags, climate control, power steering.
First thing I did.was to change the gearbox oil, front differential oil & power steering fluid, which all came out black. I suppose the P.O.s and their mechanics stuck to the book using only mileage as an indicator of maintenance intervals.
Rear Blower resistor had been replaced with the -02 version but the A/C and oil cooler resistors were original and starting to disintegrate underneath. Car did not have the distributor vent kit. PO had the vent kit fitted on his dime and and I sent the distributor out to have the belt replaced soon after I got it.
Over the winter of 2010, I had my mechanic fix the oil leaks
- cam chain covers
- steering pump drive shaft
- front diff / Drive shaft seal
then I did the following, (some of it documented here on RL)
-added Perfect Power Strut Brace
-updated fuel filler neck (964.201.043.06) and new gas cap gasket (944-201-553-00), which reduced the fuel smell in the cabin by 80%
-Pulled CCU to clean and lube the squealing fan.
-Cleaned, conditioned all leather and re-dyed some isolated abrasions.
-Cleaned out ISV
-Replaced front brake pads (Textar, good but dusty) and rotors w/ Zimmermans
-Replaced tires with Continental ExtremeContact DWS.
-Replaced drop links.
-Replaced Heated Seat Relays (1 under each seat 928.618.521.03)
-Replaced Power Steering Fluid Hose (Pump to Reservoir)
-Replace Air Filter, O2 sensor, Distributor Caps and rotors
-Brake fluid flush. (except C4 locks)
-Replaced Frunk gas struts and engine lid gas struts.
-Disassembled and unstuck heating Servo #2 (still working, knock on wood)
-Replaced "low tone" horn
-Added resistor to trigger oil cooler fan at lower temperature.
-Replaced spoiler curtain.
-Replaced 1993 Alpine stereo cassette, OEM amp, and 6CD changer with updated iphone/ipod friendly Alpine.
-Installed Cat Bypass, Cup pipe and Wong 93 Octane chip.
-Had a bar fabricated which installed on existing hardware, behind the rear seats to act as a 3rd LATCH point for child seats.
I enjoyed the car (immensely) for the spring, summer and fall 2011, and had the car back at the shop earlier this month to perform the following:
-Lower with Bilstein HDs and H&R 'greens'
- Replace all flexible brake lines and another full flush including C4 Locks..
-replaced rear sway bar with 21mm.
-Fit 10mm wheel stops to support:
-17" Cup Is (7&9s) Refinished from a rough state when found on Craigslist. Finished darker than stock silver to mask the brake dust. Does a decent job and is just a little different.
-Replace steering rack boots (which crumbled when fitting the steering stops, hey could this be the reason racks are prone to failure, crappy boots that let dirt in?))
Several rubber seals failed at 34k miles, so the saying that age is more important than miles is so true. Now that the steering rack boots crumbled in my mechanic's hand, I'm wondering what's next. But I'm not worried…There's the 964 forum and search button!
Some day, I would like to replace the ET 3rd brake light with a basket handle, perhaps the next roof with a 993 version. The flag mirrors are staying, as are the door handles and the amber corners which look better against cashmere interior. Whereas clear corners are stunning against black interior IMHO.
I now have my dream car, almost exactly the way I want it.
The car is bone dry. doesn't seep or weep at the moment. A recent leak down showed all cylinders at or below 4%. Currently at 37,100 miles, she is going to remain a garage queen. There I said it, and make no apologies. Classic registration. Under 6k miles per year insurance.
She is not meant for DE or the track. If I ever go that route, it will be in a different car. Sabine is for cruising top-down on back roads on spring, summer or fall days. Pure pleasure, zero practicality,
Getting Sabine up to snuff would not have been possible without the amazing body of knowledge here on RL. Thanks to everyone who photo documented their work and took time to answer my new-guy questions.
So now finally, I would like to introduce you to……. "Sabine"

I like the tan leather with the black dash. Nice car. Good to see your getting help keeping the wheels clean.

Really nice Laker.....I like the wheels and the color you went with. Its different and makes it stand out...The combo looks excellent...The H/R greens make the car sit perfect....
Congrats on getting everything accomplished...Now you can start saving for your little ones Porsche account....She may want a turbo for her first car.......LoL...

C4 cab! Very nice. You really did a great job updating this car to top condition. Tasteful updates.
I see the fire extinguisher in your car, that reminds me to get a small one installed in mine.

Great post, Laker!
Sabine is lovely.
The house and scenery are sublime.
And your little girl is delightful.
You seem to have it all!
I have always felt that the 964 version of the cabriolet was better looking than any of the cabs that came prior or subsequently. Actually I came very close to buying a C4 cab last year but missed it in the end due to not having my funds sorted.
Love what you have done with the wheels and stance, I am lusting after a set of Cup I wheels but they are rare on the ground here in Australia...
