The rear rotors are stock 964RS, presumeably 24mm & we've not weighed Kermit since it was finished, but the last time we did I think it was sub 1100kg without fuel.

Great, thank you Colin.

I am in the process of converting my brake system to a Cup setup. I have sourced a set of 965 rear calipers and am told that in order to get them to work properly with the 24mm wide rotors one needs to machine the calipers down so that they are narrower. Would you happen to know if I need to take 2mm off each caliper half or if I just take 4mm off the inner or outer half?

From what I have been told, this is what the factory did but I can't find any documentation on exactly how the procedure was done.

Cheers, James

There's no need to do any work on your calipers. Just don't wear your rear pads down to the metal. I've been running this setup for 7 years without any problems. The said issue is that the pots could pop out, but we're talking about 2 mm a side here. The Cup cars had the regular C2/C4 calipers but with bigger pots than the stock version. Use a 2 mm thick washer between the caliper and the hub to center/align the caliper over the brake disc and bolt it on.

Best,

Thomas

Thomas, thank you for the information. Yes, I have the 965 rear calipers which have the larger pistons so I'm all set in that regard. Sounds like I can just use a 2mm thick washer to space the calipers out correctly so they are centered over the rotor.

Since i have a shop at my disposal though, it sounds like 2mm needs to come off each caliper half, according to your findings and setup.

Cheers, James

why use the 965 rears? 993 rears are the same as the 30/34 964RS rears in every respect. They are already narrowed ie correct for the 24x299 964RS rear rotors. They are even the correct color, black, but are also available in silver.

Bill, Thanks for the info. I actually have the 993 calipers but have not mounted them on the car yet. I'm really glad you clarified this for me, I misunderstood how these fit from our previous exchange. This saves me a bunch of time!!

Colin, If you don't mind, can you post some more pictures of the brake fluid bottle? I have the larger one at home but would like to see how the plumbing runs so I can install mine correctly.

Cheers, James

Glad that you are enjoying the builds, lots more to come!

I'll put it in the mail this weekend!

Can we take it from the lack of updates after this email that it wasn't the news 9m had hoped for

No, you can't. Sorry to disappoint you.

All that Olaf could confirm to Charles was that the cars were owned & run by the Derkum team which unfortunately no longer races, since the team had all the records of the cars he could not help. The lack of evidence was not news to us, this had been confirmed by Olaf a couple of years ago when interviewed by a journalist we know in relation to an article he wrote about Kermit.

The article which was obviously written before we started the restoration and unfortunately never got published because the magazine were not happy with the photos of the car at Oulton Park. I've got a copy of the article and I am trying to get permission for Tony Carey to include it in a forthcoming revised issue of the 964RS resource book.
