Default 968 trans deal

I was coming back from Red Box, decelerating, heard a slight "bang" and hit the emergency flashers. The car behind me saw sparks from something hitting the pavement. He pulled over behind me to share. Engine runs fine, clutch is heavy, etc. Sounds like it's the R & P, but there is not the typical rock tumbling sound when in gear, even when pushed. Sheriff pulls over, just as my wife was pulling up. The Sheriff allowed Dawn to tow me home with him escorting us with his lights on. Nice guy and Dawn's first tow job!

Cold beer to the first person that diagnoses the issue. I'll know tonight after putting the *** up on stands and peeking around. Looking forward to dealing with the lock nuts on my axles

This trans has just been completely gone through with new shims on the LSD, and everything was in good order. Talked with Roger at California Motorsports. He has the parts, and their forged billet side plates for these boxes. Hopefully this will be an easy fix.

I'll inform you guys tonight with photo's. Sucks.

George

Damn George, that sucks. The Porsche Gods have not been kind to you. Hope you'll be able to sort out the problem without too much grief.

If there were sparks seen from behind, my guess would be that the CV shaft sheered and was able to drop to the ground. This would be very obvious to see from under the car and since you didn't mention this already, I would assume that this is probably not the case

Are you able to go through the gears with the clutch engaged and engine running?

I'm guessing an axle. I've thought I've broken a trans more times than I can remember and it's been a cv blown up

George, was there any drive when you tested the clutch? Could be that the CV bolts just backed out. I had this happen and thought it was an internal gearbox issue. Had a 4 hour tow job!

Looks like everyone else thinks the same. Hope this is the case as this is an easy fix. Those billet plates were made for my gearbox when it was in with Roger. Nice guy to deal with.

Only thing in my mind that would cause sparks is dropping a CV. Most of us have been there.

George, the CV's you have are from the Driveshaft shop and LR now sells them. If you have the earlier version they come apart. I had a similar situation and thought it was the tranny then found it was the CV.
I called the Drive shaft shop and they sent me the updated cv's and no problems. In your case, if this turns out to be the issue, you will speak to LR I guess.
There is no 944 that can brake those cv's when you have the right updated version, they are good for 1000 ft lbs torque if my memory serves me right.
I too have the stage 8's and if they are not loose you may want to buy an extractor before you start, I ruined one bolt and that extractor made my life easy.
Great car by the way and good luck.

Looks like I need to start icing beer. It was the CV at the passenger wheel. I'd appreciate any help towards stronger CV stuff for these axles. Photo's won't load.

I'll post the pictures from my office tomorrow.

Thanks for the input guys

Pauerman then Fortysix, Sid knew first, but posted behind. Glad it's just the CV. Easy fix. I'll call LR and Taylor Race tomorrow. First to have the updated CV delivered next day gets the order. I'll order both sides, as they are likely wearing close to even.

George I started to answer your post first but got interrupted at work so I lose the beer. Happy to hear it's a simple fix. Having said that, you need to speak or email with Dave Lindsey who is aware of the issues with the earlier versions of these axles/CVs. He'll get them sorted for you. I've got pics at home of the differences between versions 1 & 2 if you have any doubts.

I have found that it is more often the CV bolts backing out and not the CV failing. Same results though as you lose the ***** out of the cage and the CV needs to be replaced. I am going to try Stage 8 CV bolts to see if it helps. I recently replaced all of my CV bolts and 1/3 were loose when I checked them after my last track day.

Patrick,

Doubt a sober Aussie? No chance my friend. I'm truly looking forward to time when I'm in Australia. I'll provide plenty of notice, and my rental will be reliable, fast, but not track worthy. Can't wait to see your 951 in person. Trust I'll buy some cold beers for all present.

Kindest Regards,

George
