Shawn,
I have one on my car... It takes a bit of grinding to get it to fit without hitting the oil-pan. I do think a scraper / windage tray is a good idea. I also suggest looking into windowing the block, to allow cylinder-2-cylinder breathing.

Thanks Joshua. I am definitely moving forward with the scrapper. I guess the concept for "windowing the block" would be to minimize the oil cloud by stabilizing the crank case environment? Any reference links? I did a search but maybe I am not using the right terms. TIA.

Lindsey has a picture on this page (about 3/4 the way down):
http://www.lindseyracing.com/hptalk/0808.htm
Also known as bay-to-bay breathing, which is something the GM LS-series have. The 3.0L 968 block has it too.
Basically, instead of the displaced air having to go to the pan, and up into the adjacent cylinder, possibly aerating the oil - it gives it a nice direct-route.

weekly racing blog update:
not the greatest night. The car ran great. With the exception of having decent air to work with.
I know I said I was going to be done with this conversation, but tonight was an acute example of how severly bad air can effect cars up here.
Honestly I thought tonight I was going to be able to get some good runs in.
Car running perfect -Check
2 step ready for action-check
Drag radials on-check
No issues whatsoever
Get there and go through my same routine.
Unload the car
go cool it off quickly at the water tank
go through tech and get into the lanes
All was perfect
Make my run. Car launches good with a 2.05 sixty foot (edit 1.99)
Car feels slow through the gears (boost is set exactly where it has been)
Get the slip--hmm--WTF13.01 @ 109.
I'm pissed while I cool the car down. I have to calm down and look at the logs. Nothing wrong, 12.2psi boost, engine fine, AFR's are rich but this doesn't normally effect it that bad. MAF voltage is down to 3.5v vs 4.0 volts usually. AHH, I think something may be wrong with the filter..NOPE all is well.
Get back to the pits where I'm parked around a few friends I've made up there this year. TWO of them have BMW's One is a 335xi (Twin turbo car) the other is a 335i coupe also a tt car. Both have looks of disappointment on their faces. They both were off their normal ET by .5 seconds and down between 5-7mph.
I get ready for my next pass and decide I'm going to turn up the boost. I run a 12.54 @112.75. It went a respectable 1.97 sixty foot. I ran 16-17 psi. I'm not too unhappy with it at this point and make another run it goes a 12.52 @ 114 1.86 sixty foot. I ran between 17 and 18 psi.
I try to make a final run and turn it up just a little bit hoping for a miracle and decent ET and it goes slower 12.77 @111.4.
We all get to talking and had been talking in the lanes and found out the air measured over 9600ft most of the night. This is over a 1000ft higher than normal. Everyone was going slower.
The BMW's consistantly run 12.90's and 12.6's every week. They ran 13.50's and 13.10-20's all night. The Z06 I've been hanging around usually runs 12.70's and tonight ran a best of 13.2something.
Air makes a difference... There is absolutely NO DOUBTin my mind about it.
A couple of the officials were talkign and they were talking about a few of their friends that were running way off their normal ET and just trailered them up. One said the air had measured over 10,000ft at points.
It was a crappy night, no doubt about it!!!
One last thought.. I noticed that all night long the intercooler piping was hotter than normal. BY quite a bit. The engine also was creeping up in temp through the run each time. Usually I don't have to stop at the cooling area after runs but tonight I did to get down to decent temps.
So my idea as to why it just doesn't make as much power on nights like these (high DA and high temps) is that it is just working so much harder to make teh same pressure that it heats the air so much more than normal.
It dawned on me after I gor close to home and the car was feeling much stronger. It was cooler out and I did a couple pulls and the MAF readings were close to what I normally see. 4.0v at 12psi and 4.20 at just over that psi.
Anyway..I can't wait for another chance to take it up. I may look into going to another track in the area. They are just slightly lower in elevation, but the air isn't generally as thin. The only problem is that I'd have to trailer it to one of them and I like being able to drive my car to and from the track.
Ohh and here are the slips

Disappointing Sid but you'll be back bigger and better.
Hey I meant to ask you, have you found any issues with the stock intake in all your builds so far? Have you had to trim individual cylinders to compensate for any flow deficiencies?

Any way you slice it those are some great sixty foot times for these cars and getting them that consitently is a real accomplishment. For comparison as to the effect of altitude, at 2200' I ran a 2.167 - 60' with 12.505 et at 120.85mph at 18psi and street 245/45/16 tires. For comparison very close to the same ETs with worse 60' times yet higher mph. Interestingly you made it to the first 60' with a faster mph(or else your time would not have been faster) we were running almost the same boost, mine is a 3.0 yours a 2.9, mine on pump gas, yours on E85 and yet I was able to gain 6 more extra mph over the distance than you. Only one thing significantly different and that is density altitude.
Great project and great results.

So I have a question for you all of the drag strip guys about your 1/4 mile times.
My car is very fast......but at the moment I am using the schnell short shifter which sucks beyond believe.
What are all of you using for short shifters? I am losing with the bad shifter I would swear about a second or more per shift. I lost my stock linkage during my build.
The stock shifter in my 86 was much faster.....anyhow I never hear anyone talk about speeding up the shifting setup.
I want to try X-chops shifter and a couple other for curiosity sake.
What say all of you??????? Especially Sid your experience regarding 1/4 mile!!!
Thanks,
Jason

I'm at 3100 with me in it.
Like I said the air sucked horribly. The mph was way off.
I might go to some better air this weekend. The DA was over 10000 at times and where I'll go is around 6000.
In regards to the shifter, I'm using the stocker, just cut down. It works fine for me. I don't really speed shift it.
